Gerald posted an image and a question about an unusual occurrence with some wood he was turning.

Here's a picture of what he was talking about

The discussion can be read here-

A while back, we were discussing how turners like to try different media to create that unique piece. Carl Jacobson posted a video where he turns an aluminum and resin bowl. It's a beauty!

If you turn projects from logs, you may have found it difficult to keep the log secured while milling with the chainsaw. Here's a short video from the Wyoming Woodturner demonstrating a handy "holder".

The May issue of Woodturning OnLine is available. One of the items is a video showing how to create a segmented Bolo Tie. While not for every area of the country, I imagine this would be popular at crafts shows in the West.

And the video, by "As Wood Turns"-

If you are looking for a project that is more artful than functional, this issue has instructions on a beautiful off-centered turning

The piece is by Lisa Chemerika. The step-by-step is at- https://www.canadianwoodworking.com/plans-projects/turn-saueracker-shell

Mostly, we turners use a clear finish on our pieces. It highlights the woods natural beauty. Another possibility is illustrated by Amy Christie in an article from this same issue.

She applies gold leaf to add another dimension of beauty. Her process is here-

The "leafing" process is kind of fun. Many years ago, I made a maître d' station for our "adopted" son's restaurant. The restaurant is called the Copper Kettle. He wanted some sort of business card holder at the station. This is what I came up with-

It was turned from wood and copper leaf placed over the outside.

For the pen turners, a pen for the survivalist-

This new Survival pen has 3 main components, a ball point pen, a fire starter and a glass breaker. The cap finial functions as a decorative cap and also contains a carbide glass breaker. The body finial also functions as a decorative end and contains a flint fire rod. The uniquely designed clip also functions as a striking plate. The glass breaker works on tempered glass on side windows.

Safe Turning

I like the copper pot. We have Jimmy Clewes here next month and one of the projects will use copper leaf.

You really overworked yourself this week Lew.  There's enough content that it will take a while to find the time to get through.  Looks quite interesting.

Lots of good information this week, and every week for that matter. Thanks Lew

Steve

Another awesome segment -Great Job, Lew!

Just watched Carl turn the acrylic/aluminum bowl.  Looked fantastic but what a mess.  I don't much care for turning acrylic.

Another week that'll spin ya'!:D As a;ways Lew, well done with a trove of information, techniques & possibilities.

Thanks for your in-depth research and relevance.

BTW, like your copper kettle too!

Thanks for all of the kind comments!

Gerald, looking forward to seeing the projects you do with copper leaf.
