April 23, 20179 yr Popular Post Subject: WWII --- interesting info. Just scroll down a bit. For the history buffs. Some of our fathers were involved. Some very interesting World War II Facts. Many you would not believe or were even aware of. The first German serviceman killed in the war was killed by the Japanese Over 100,000 Allied bomber crewmen were killed over Europe More U.S. Servicemen died in the Air Corps than the Marine Corps Polish Catholic midwife Stanisawa Leszczyñska delivered 3,000 babies at the Auschwitz Concentration camp during the Holocaust in occupied Poland In World War II, British soldiers got a ration of three sheets of toilet paper a day Americans got 22 In 1941, more than three million cars were manufactured in the United States . Only 139 more were made during the entire war Four of every five German soldiers killed in the war died on the Eastern Front Only 20 percent of the males born in the Soviet Union in 1923 survived the war In World War II, the youngest serviceman in the United States military was Calvin Graham - age 12. Graham lied about his age when he enlisted in the US Navy. His real age was not discovered until after he was wounded. (Unbelievable) Only one out of every four men serving on U-boats survived The Siege of Stalingrad resulted in more Russian deaths (military and civilian) Than the United States and Britain sustained (combined) in all of World War II To avoid using the German sounding name 'hamburger' during World War II, Americans used the name 'Liberty Steak.' Adolf Hitler's nephew, William Hitler, served in the US Navy during World War II Adolph Hitler and Henry Ford each kept a framed picture of the other on his desk. During World War II, the largest Japanese spy ring was actually located in Mexico The mortality rate for Russian POWs in German camps was 85 percent Had it been necessary for a third atom bomb, the city targeted would have been Tokyo An Imperial Japanese Army intelligence officer, who fought in World War II, Hiroo Onoda never surrendered in 1945. Until 1974, for almost 30 years, he held his position in the Philippines. His former commander traveled from Japan to personally issue orders relieving him from duty in 1974. Total casualties for World War II totaled between 50 - 70 million people, 80 percent of which came from only four countries - Russia, China, Germany and Poland. Over 50 percent of the casualties were civilians, with the majority of those being women and children. Veterans are people who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check payable to the United States Of America, for an amount up to and including their life. Remember All Of Our Veterans ! ! !
April 23, 20179 yr I've had the opportunity to walk thru a B-17 at various air shows. The young men who flew in those aircraft were brave beyond description. No armor, no protection from the elements, virtual sitting ducks from attacks from both the ground and air. We owe them and all of our fighting men and women the greatest debt of gratitude for our freedom.
April 23, 20179 yr Popular Post When we were in the field for extended missions, we used the Army latrines, ours were side by side, three sitters per unit, you had to take a crap while sitting next to another guy taking a crap, just inches away from each other. It was ply wood with two butt holes cut into the top, and three toilet seats mounted. I remember walking into the latrine one morning to do my morning business before chow, the full bird Colonel was sitting down talking with another officer who was sitting down next to him, it was just the three of us, I was a PFC. When I entered the latrine, I wasn't sure if I should salute or just sit down, I started to salute and the full bird told me to "At Ease private and have a seat". I asked him, "sir, you sure I should be here with you?" and he smiled and he said, "now you know, Full Birds crap just like the privates, now sit down!". That was the most uncomfortable crap I ever took. Thinking back on it, I don't think I let loose till those two gents left the latrine, I was frozen. Seeing the image with the butts hanging out over the rail, made me remember this, and I thought we had it bad, but at least our latrines were enclosed! By the way, the officers finally got their own latrine built after the engineers showed up and started improving the conditions in that forward base. But it was rough for the first month we were there. May God Bless always the men and women who preserve our freedoms, in the past and well into the future.
April 25, 20179 yr The hell of war is beyond description. It is government leaders who decide to go to war and send ordinary folks like us to do the fighting and dying. People on all sides suffered immensely. hat

April 26, 20179 yr John M after looking at your age I couldn't figure out what war you were in. So If it was the gulf war, at least it was a short one... I was in the army in Germany 58 to 60 and we had separate latrines way back then. Kinda regressed a little huh!
