Pilot hole jig

I saw the idea in one of the zines, but the author (it turned out) wasn't comprehensive enough in determining the various sizes of bits needed for both soft and hard woods.  I did some research, found several screw mfr's recommended tables, boiled them down (there were some differences, usually 1/64" for a specific duty) to the table in the upper left corner of the layout below.  The zine had a different layout, and I messed around with it, made the ver.1 jig, used it for several months, then thought of a better way.  This is actually v.4.  the outline is 7" x 3.3", which will fit on a 2x4 with maybe a 1/4" margin along the top (see the 4 dots?  dots show where to drill; along the top, drill holes equal to the "SHANK" size for each screw size, above the size number, and this allows you to measure the screw if you don't know the size).

I attached my guide to the 2x4x7 piece (after painting it Livid Berry), and wrapped it on with clear packing tape.  The blank area in the upper right is where I put a couple pegs for depth stops, and a countersink bit, etc.  There are holes for more than just the bits shown on the (upper left) chart; the bit packages (with 1/4" shanks) have some additional sizes.  I don't necessarily have all the bit sizes shown.

I found using packing tape that drilling the holes after taping makes a real garbage hole, so I cut a little circle with a curved carving tool around each hole.  In retro, It probably makes more sense to print two copies of the layout*, temp the first on the block, drill the holes, garbage up the paper, then put a fresh copy on top, tape it all, and awl punch the holes thru the paper/tape.

Even using the old v.1 layout, this proved much better than my previous "hold the screw and a drill bit up to the light and guess" method.  Vivid Berry color (which I use on similar tool jigs) makes it easier to find!

*Anyone wanting a copy, I'll pdf it and attach it in Reply at scouterpmphx@gmail.com.

I like this forum.  Smart groups answer all questions!!  Attaboys to all!!!

And we all know what Attaboys are worth.

HOLY SOUP BATMAN!!  Looking at the picture:  I never drilled the screw-sizing holes in the top row, above the 6  8  10  12   !!  Gettin' old.

I don't see any holes.

Me neither!  BUT there are supposed to be 4 holes, just north of the "6  8  10  12" row at the top of the paper.  Argh.  Actually, NOW my copy has them.
