March 31, 20179 yr This is a pair of bowls I made for a friend from a limb she picked up from a tree cutter in her neighborhood. She asked him what the wood was and he said oak.........NOT. No strong smell and wood is white. After some investigation I deduced this to be elm. The lidded box has a floating bowl and the open one has flying wings . Have only turned elm once before and that piece was dry. Have to say it turns very easily. The lid is padauk and the finial is brazilian ebony. Had the ebony for a while and decided it was time to utilize . That is the hardest wood I have ever tried to turn.
March 31, 20179 yr Beautiful pieces Gerald. And to think, someone was just going to burn this...both your friend and you had a far greater vision for just a chunk of wood. Thanks for sharing.
March 31, 20179 yr Really nice work Gerald but that looks really light for elm. Not seeing it in person and just from the pictures I would guess maple. What ever it is they are very nice. Nice job on the finial as well. Steve
March 31, 20179 yr Those are nice. I have done a few and find they are easy to get a good catch on. I have turned Elm and thought it has a grain similar to Oak and Ash. Maybe hard Maple?
March 31, 20179 yr Author My elm conclusion was from something a club member told be about it. He said it had a z appearance to the grain and this has that . Also Maple here (only soft) does not have a distinct grain. Here is a shot of the bottom. Thanks for the comments. Edited March 31, 20179 yr by Gerald
