February 21, 20179 yr Popular Post Well, one shell of a white oak bookcase down and one to go. The twin will have the face, back and top added tomorrow. I'm so ready for these to leave.
February 21, 20179 yr Author I will be applying the stain and finish Lew. I handed her the color samples today so hopefully by the end of the week I'll have it stained and will shoot it next week. It is 78" tall and 12" deep by 36" wide. I'm going to give her the option of a cleat on the back or a screw through the back into a stud. It is pretty stable but I'd sure hate for a grandchild to bring it over on them if they tried to climb it.
February 21, 20179 yr Very nice work. I don't like to get into big items like that anymore. Biggest reason is the basement shop.
February 22, 20179 yr Very nice Ron...I'm sure you will be glad to get those out of the shop too...gotta' weigh a bunch... Looking forward to seeing pics once the finish is done. Thanks...

February 22, 20179 yr Nice case, Ron! One question: I've noticed on most tall bookcases there is a fixed shelf about half way up. Is this unnecessary with REAL wood, and just insurance when using MDF? Just curious. John

John Usually, I'll put a solid shelf in the center to give the bookcase some extra rigidity to prevent it from racking. On this bookcase, I fitted the back panel very snugly in hopes to add that same stiffness. Sure hope it works. You probably can't see it in the pictures but there are two tops on this bookcase. I cut a 3/4 rabett in the top and recessed a 3/4" top and then I glued another top over it so the case is really pretty structurally sound.
