long ago, MS and Apple worked together on projects that benefited users.  you and me.  they concluded that it was better to grow the universe of computer users than to continue to fight, waste money and time on lawyers, and reduce benefits to paying customers.

saw stop could make the same decision, decide that customer safety was important and work to expand their technology.  but they have decided to be the only game in town, shutting down others, and charging what they can get for their saws.  meanwhile, people keep cutting themselves on saws that do not have their technology on them.

if i was in charge of SS, i'd call up the other makers and make them the following offer:  i'll license the SS technology to you for $1 per saw sold, and you will feature my name/SS name on the saw and advertising.  and tout how important I believe customer safety is.

for an interesting comparison story, look up the story about the guy who invented the intermittent windshield wiper.  he tried to go it on this own, went nuts, died broke.  or go read about Dr. Sauk.

he's a jerk and an idiot.

I agree with what you say,and that would be a sensible solution, and Bosch could do what Microsoft did and license their technology to every other manufacturer, and there would be 2 different choices for woodworkers. In the long run the Bosch would win out because it is the superior system.

To SS credit the do have a quality product, but priced above other quality products.

It seems like Glass has written a patent so broad that it is like patenting the word "is".

Herb

if his patent is overly broad, there are ways to fix that, ways that cost money paid to very smart lawyers.

every dollar paid to a lawyer is a dollar not spent on innovation.

so if he's making enough to keep his lawyers busy defending his saws, yay for him.  but that's money not spent improving his product.  not money spent on supplying shop classes with his saws (apple wisely got their Macs into schools long ago).

his money, he can do as he pleases.  likewise, i can choose not to spend MY money on his over-rated machines.

at some point, he'll sell his last saw.  then what?

So who has the most money, Bosch or Gass, will be the question. or rather who is willing to spend the most. Your points are very well taken.

looks to me that Bosch spent their money on innovation.  Gass spent his on lawyers to chase Bosch, and won.

if i was advising someone to buy a new tablesaw, i'd steer them AWAY from sawstop.  your money is going to go to lawyers to discourage innovation and safety.  buy something else and learn to use it safely and you'll be fine.

i'm distressed every time i see a TV show with someone using a TS unsafely.  if i was editor, i'll yell CUT!.  let's show this being done properly and safely.  you don't need to watch the blade cut the wood.  it'll cut.  really.  watch your fingers.  watch the wood to fence contact.

Gass has been spending money on lawyers since he wasn't able to force manufacturers to buy his product by having the government mandate its use by all manufacturers  He was asking a price that would have made it impossible for his competitors to  compete against him. Lawyers are his specialty, not tool safety.

You can call Gass a lot of names, but one of them isn't idiot. He holds a PhD in physics, and a law degree for patent law. The man is closer to genius...and while what he is doing is deplorable and the jerk part is dead on, he's not an idiot (IMHO). Lest this be misconstrued; I'm not his admirer; just credit due where it belongs.

Stick, backspace took out the original post, but it does nothing to eliminate all that empty space. in between. You're talking to a real computer illiterate here. It stopped backspacing once the printed words had been erased

My lawyers will be contacting you.   I have seventeen utility patents on the Backspace Key.

Based on his actions, his first priority is not user safety. So to me he's an idiot.

Greedy, clever, self serving.

Attorneys are a different breed. he is doing what he does well. he probably smarter than the ITC members who are probably appointed positions. I hope there is an appeal process.
