I'm looking for a new source for w/b finishing.   I spray HVLP.   

 

My prior suppliers have gone awry.  I was using some Valspar stuff, then Valspar Zenith.   But the store was having a hard time getting it in stock.   It would take several months to get it on any of their orders.   Then I tried S-W KemAqua that was fine, but only one store (their industrial) carries it in town and then only in 5 gal which I can't use in a year.   They were nice enough to decant out a gallon for me, but the next time I went back, it was already past its expiration date.  Both now are another 30 minutes away from me.

Have you looked at General Finishes? I do not know about a local store (woodcraft sells their stuff) but they are very easy to get through various internet sites (woodworker's hardware and others)

Aware of them, but not used their w/b finishes.   We have Woodcraft and Rockler right around the corner from each other.

I like Target coatings EM6000 production lacquer. It is an easy finish to apply, flows out beautifully and it's nearly impossible to get a run or sag. I do use it on smaller items and don't know how it would be on a larger piece. They have just introduced a high build formulation, EM7000. It's time to reorder and I may give that a try.

Not sure what you mean. I live in Indiana and have had it shipped here a few times.

Have you considered Varathane ? I've had good luck with it, and my son used it on the floors in his home with great looking results. Not sure about spraying , but for brush on and wipe on, I've had great results.

He might be thinking about the temps.

If it got delayed and had to sit in a truck at 3* it might (will) ruin it.

I know some of the internet suppliers will not ship general finishes in the winter

Target has shipped to me in the winter, when I aksed they said the movement during transport keeps it safe from freezing. They did caution about getting to it quickly when it was delivered, though. That aside, as much as i like their stuff, with shipping it gets pretty expensive. That, plus it's only in gallons (I think) and the GF stuff is usually available locally in quarts. I've used GF High Performance and the Endurovar and really like it. I've only sprayed them, but have read that Endurovar brushes very well. When I wind up all water borne, I'm fairly certain I'll stay with GF.

Hi Fred. I agree with most everything you said. Especially the part about the target finishes being expensive to ship and receive. With that said, it simply is the best finish I've ever used and I worked for some few years in the refinishing industry. I never thought I'd stop using nitrocellulose but I don't see me ever spraying it again.

I have not used the general finishes as I was completely turned off by water born finishes and only tried the em6000 at a friends insistence. A quick check tells me  the Endurovar is comparable in price. Still, if I could by it locally I might give it a try.

Endurovar is more expensive than most the GF stuff. It's a different technology (apparently) than most waterbornes, called an "modified oil waterborne". I can't find out much about that other than  it's not simply an acrylic with a drop of urethane. But it's really a nice finish, and quite durable. But if I could get Target coating products as easily (locally) I would use them.
