Glue up question

Featured Replies

Good evening folks, just a quick question regarding glue ups.

I am going to be building some pretty basic wood trays from a pic off pinterest.  I would like to use a waterbase dye prior to assembly and then finish with top coats after the glueups are completed.  Plan to use Titebond original glue.  Will there be any problem with this plan?  I am thinking I should be ok, but I have not done it in this order before.

Thanks,

Cal

If the question is will waterbase dye affect TB curing then the answer is no........IF the dye dries first. Note that waterbase dye will raise the grain and needs to be sanded . If color is lightened by sanding the apply more dye.

Titebond would most likely hold even if surface is wet but it would weaken the bond.

I personally have never worked with dyes, but it seems a dye shouldn't create any problems with glue. You might try a sample piece  first.

Thanks for the quick replies!  I didn't figure it should be a problem, any more than if I did a quick wash of the board, particularly since the TB is a waterbase glue.  The plan is to apply the dye and let it dry overnight before assembly.

Cal...think Al & Gerald have given you sound & accurate advice...

Take a look at this link...even gives instructions how to add dye to the glue...

Thanks for that link Dave.  I have never heard of doing this, but I am always open to some experimentation.  Not on today's project, but filed away for a future one.

Hello Cal. For my smaller pieces such as jewelry boxes, I always apply blue painters tape cut to fit the area to be glued after a finish is applied. If finish comes after gluing, I'll apply the tape outside the glue surface to keep the glue from getting into the wood that will receive the finish. Its extra steps but it saves a lot of extra work cleaning up errors.

Thanks for that link, Dave.
