January 19, 20179 yr Popular Post After the last meeting our turning club had back in November we were diccussing covers for turning tools to protect the edges from damage and protect others from getting hurt by the sharp edges. I thought maybe Kydex and someone suggested PVC. I looked at what I had and the cost of getting different diameters. For my 5/8 Thompson I used 1/2 schedule 40 and a heat gun to soften and stretch. For my 1 1/4 scrapers I used 1 inch schedule 40 which when flattened is a perfect fit. Note that schedule 40 has a little memory so while still hot tends to spring back so I had to leave in the vise to cool and it stays that way. The cover for the bowl gouge fits so well that the gouge will not go any deeper into the sleeve.
January 19, 20179 yr Popular Post Gerald, When you heat up your pvc, use a wet cloth to help cool it and it will maintain the bent shape you have given it That is what we do when we have to make our own sweeps for conduit runs Edited January 19, 20179 yr by Chips N Dust
January 19, 20179 yr Danged slick Gerald, thanks for the great tip! Sharing this one on social media for our social media turners, thanks!
January 19, 20179 yr I was watching guys lay pvc in a foundation long ago and they used a pickup exaust to heat the pipe and a garden hose to set the shapes. They were probably ill eagles from another country. The unions might have frowned on something that classy and simple.
January 19, 20179 yr Very good idea Gerald. Do you use the covers all the time or just for travel and demos?
January 19, 20179 yr Great idea Gerald, I don't have any turning tools but will look at adapting that to some chisels I have in the drawer. Herb
