Sliding T-Bevel

Came down with a cold on New Years Eve but back to 100% today.  Instead of making dust I played around with some metal all week.  I picked this bevel gauge this Summer because I liked how it looked and the price was right.  I took it apart before I thought about pictures.

There are two screws in the picture.  The screw tightens up on a beveled washer on the inside to set the blade where it is needed.  The original had the threads stripped off so I made a new one.  The thumb piece was soldered into a groove cut in the end of the screw so it was easy to transfer to the new one.  The body is nickel plated cast iron and has AVER AUG 6 stamped into it.  Gave all the pieces a good wire brushing to clean them up and put it together.  Most of the nickel is gone.

The wheel has an "S" to mark 90 degree and "3SM" to mark the 45 degrees and 135 degrees.  Seems odd, never saw that before.  It is surprisingly accurate.

Also got a cast iron 8" hacksaw and an adjustable hacksaw with an odd adjustment to it.  A thumb knob is moved into an out of squared off notches in the frame.  They are both Union Mfg.  Probably have to cut a blade down to use the 8" saw.

Looks kinda familiar. This one shares part of both of yours. It was my dad's, dates back to just after WW II, possibly earlier. The straight handle was/is very popular in Europe.

I read it it as "S" means Square, the 3rd long mark on both sides is marked "3", and the 4 1/2 mark is long and marked "SM".

Is the "3" or the "SM" the 45deg. mark?

Looking at it again, the 3 is 30 deg. (6 marks of 5degrees) The "SM" is 9 marks or 45 degrees.

Sweet finds Dan...Glad the cold is better...wish I could shake mine...

Adjustable bevel square is cool...I've got a couple similar made by Miller-Falls ~50's, but I'd guess yours is older...

Nice job on the refurbs

I think you hit the nail on the head.  What does the SM stand for?

SM = Sadomasochistic...

I couldn't figure that out either, has something to do with 45deg. , Must be another "Whatisit"

Nice job cleaning up the bevel square, that one is still a good tool, beats the heck out of those plastic ones they sell now.

 If S stands for square could SM stand for square miter ?   Roly

Roly, I think maybe you have something there. A square miter (like the corner of a picture frame) is a 45 deg.  Works for me.

A good explanation in my eyes too.  First time for everything and we learned something new again.  This forum is great.

Very nice Dan. I'm like you, I like the look also. Cleaned up really nice.
