Here is my latest basket illusion piece.  It is a 14½ inch diameter Navajo style wedding basket.  The wood is maple that has been beaded and then woodburning pens were used to create the woven basket illusion.  Copic ink pens were used to color the pattern which is the classic Navajo wedding basket design.

Thanks, Lew.  It's hard to say how long it took because I worked on and off for about 1½ years.  I turned the basic form for two identical size pieces and then worked on the other one to donate it to the 2015 Christmas auction of my turning club.  I suppose that the total time is several hundred hours if you include the time I spent making CAD drawings and making special tools.  A lot of the delays were due to searching the web for some of the things that I needed.

Thank you, Steve.  Yes there was a lot of really tedious burning and I frequently would get drowsy and nod off while doing the pyrography.  That was scary because I came close to burning myself a number of times.

The beading is part of the turning process.  After turning the basic shallow bowl shape to a uniform wall thickness of 5/16" I used the D-Way beading tools from Dave Schweitzer.  This piece was beaded with the 3/16" beading tool so the piece was really thin between the beads ... Thin enough that a bright light could be seen from the other side.

Thanks for the additional details. I would imagine you have quite the optics system to be able to concentrate on the extremely small details.

 I thought that the beading tool was like a wheel that made impressions in the wood, then I enlarged the pic to see what you did. That's freaking amazing. Thanks for the videos.
