Accidental toys

Dadio told about making Keva blocks for his grandson and that reminded me of toys I accidentally made

I keep all my scrap wood in a large plastic bin. When it gets full I take it to a neighbor who camps. It is a young family and they have 3 small kids. My bin was about full and I took it over. I discovered that the last load I took over was mostly still there. I asked if they were still camping and he assured me they went most weekends. Then he explained why they were  not burning my wood. My bin had so many neat cuts, angles, circles, arcs etc that the kids play and build stuff with them. So now before I discard scrap wood, I make some designs on the bandsaw or drill different holes in the wood, I also sand down rough places and places that could injure little fingers.

Ron that was Kieth that was talking about the Keva blocks, but I think your idea is a good one too. Small kids like to do things with their hands and that is a great imagination builder, and kids have big imaginations. Legos were the best baby sitter in town when my youngest was small. Now vidio games and cell phones seem to be in vogue.

When the older boys were small I gave them some blocks of wood and hammer and nails to bang on, that was before the "precious little fingers act " was passed.

Great story and ideas Ron! Hard to believe you ever have any scrap though after seeing so many of your unique projects.

Oohh, don't get me started Herb...my parents & grand-parents would be imprisoned today for the things they allowed us boys to do...I'm "secretly" letting my grandsons do some of the same things so don't tell anybody.
