95 year old combat veteran John Glenn went to be with his maker today.  He spent his life reaching for the heavens and now he is there.

A true American hero Fred.

Just heard - he will lie in state in Columbus, OH and then buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.

 

Yes, Ron, a hero in many instances in American eyes.

It always makes me sad when people like John Glenn pass, there are so few left of ones like him

I remember listening to the radio broadcast when he made his first space flight. And, watching when he rode in the space shuttle.

I was in fifth grade and we traced his orbits on a globe in the front of the classroom.   Before that, very few people could count from 10 to 0.   Now my 4 year old grandkids do it when playing with their toys.

 

And yes, Godspeed.

I think he was the oldest Astronaut to fly - anyone verify this???

"In 1998, at the age of 77, he become the oldest person to go into space by being a part of Discovery's STS-95 mission as a payload specialist. The nine-day-long mission had many goals, including an investigation into the effects of spaceflight and weightlessness on the elderly. Discovery orbited Earth 134 times, traveling 3.6 million miles."

Glen's achievements in space were recognized by everyone, but he was really a hero as one of our best fighter pilots during WW11 and in Korea. May he rest in peace.
