Electric motor

Motor has contact points, cleaned them up, now it does nothing. Question: Are the points supposed to be open or closed when not running? Thanks!

I would guess open but that's just a guess.

Are the contact points for the start winding?  In that case, they should be closed until the motor is running.

It probably is the starting part since it has a start capacitor. That could explain why it does not start. When I cleaned them, I probably bent them a little and they are not making contact. According to a book I picked up at the local library, only authorized repair shops are supposed to set them. It does not give any specs either.

Grizzly has a good U-tube video on cleaning and adjusting a start switch...

Thanks all! The Grizzly video helped me with adjustment as well. Will let you know what I find, but it will be a while before I get back around to it.

Good luck. If you end up needing a new motor Grizzly has some good prices. I had to buy a new motor for an old table saw and Grizzly had the best price by far.

The motor on this old Powermatic looks to be proprietary which means that it would have to be provided by Powermatic probably. That means that I would be better off to junk the saw!

You might be surprised. The motor I needed was for my wife's dad's saw. It is at least 55 to 60 years old. The new motor I bought wasn't an exact match but it didn't take much to make it work.

Hey, what part of West Virginia are you from? I lived in Beckley before moving back to upstate S.C. A lot of snow and some great folks up there.

HF has some good motors, I bought one for my BS
