In the Logging Business

Featured Replies

Good Morning Friends,

In the logging business logs were sometimes pulled out of the woods by the means of a rope tide to the horses single tree and around the log by what is called a timber hitch. How would you make this hitch?

Something I learned in the Boy Scouts (best days of my childhood) and still remember. Take the short end and wrap it around the line, then loop it back around itself....we always did it twice but I suppose you could do more if you wanted. Nice thing about it was how quick it would come undone once you dragged the piece of wood to where ever it was supposed to be.

Good question, before my time. We used a tractor and chokers. The closest I got to boy scouts was reading "Boys Life" magazine. we were too busy on the farm as younguns.

Great answers and the video make it easy. Thanks everyone.

In my area, the logs were to big for rope. So either chains or choker cables were used

What I remember from scouts is that is followed up by two half-hitches.   The tighter you pull, the more the knot grabs.

I thought at the time learning all those knots was a waste, but I use them all the time now.
