Wednesday's Wisdom For Woodturners November 23, 2016

Featured Replies

A little nicer day, today. The wind finally calmed down and the temps have returned to their average for this time of year. Got the mower and snow blower switched out, leaves finished up and hoses put away. Let it snow!

As it is Thanksgiving weekend, here's a few videos for your enjoyment.

A couple of years ago, I read about a skew grind that was a little more forgiving when it came to catches. I didn't know it had a special name but recently came across this video describing  the proper method of grinding. The author of the video is Alan Lancer. I can attest that this grind is much easier to use.

Speaking of catches, turner Richard Raffan has a video explaining what happens to cause a turning tool to catch. He demonstrates the skew, gouge and scraper.

Sometimes it is nice to just admire the absolute beauty created by some turners. Here is just such an example- "Segmented Woodturning, a woodcraft display by Bruce Meldrum from 1995"-

Unfortunately, this video cannot be embedded but it is worth a look!

Now if you're looking for that artistic turned piece, to make you the envy of your friends, here you go- (instructions included).

With the Holiday Season upon us, our very generous sponsor Woodcraft in conjunction with the American Woodshop put together a nice little video featuring gifts that would make any woodturner/woodworker happy. Have a look-

I did get the remaining scoops finished up today. Some walnut, some maple and walnut and a butternut. Bee's wax and mineral oil finish. Hope I din't forget anyone-

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

If you live in Pennsylvania, deer season starts Monday- Good Luck and be safe!!

Safe Turning

Thanks Lew.  I really enjoyed the video on catches.  It is amazing how I jump even though I am just watching.  Catches happen so fast.  I believe I learned a few things.

Watched the double Taurus video.  What a lot of work that is but then the result is fantastic too.

Lew, your scoops look great.  They should be around for use for a long time.  Nice gift idea.

I reground my favorite skew to the rounded nose and it does work better with fewer runbacks. The scoops look great

Thanks, guys , for the kind words!

I still have a love-hate relationship with the skew. Turning beads is my nemesis!
