Motor buzzes but won't run

Featured Replies

Worked on table saw, had to remove motor, did not disconnect cord from it or from switch. When I finished reinstalling the motor, it would only buzz and move just about a 1/16". So, I checked switch to see if any disconnect, plugged it into another wall socked that is running a large belt sander fine, but still the same thing. It acts like a motor with a bad capacitor. Looks strange that it had given no problems prior to remove and intall. So, any suggestions on how to check it further? Thanks!

Without it plugged in, can you move the motor armature by hand - moves freely?  Now install the blade, does it still move freely?  Sounds like you have something binding in there.

Just guessing that the trunnion repair has been made.  Your problem could be the capacitor, but as Fred suggested, you may have something binding things solidly. Remove the belt from the motor to see if it will run with no load on it.

The other possibility is that it may have starting contacts that may be dirty- from moving the motor- cleaning them may help

When moving a motor that be around saw dust or dirt there is a good chance that some dust/dirt got under the starting points. The easiest fix that works most of the time is to plug the motor in and turn it on and give the shaft a good push start. If it starts the dirty points will open and if your lucky the dist/dirt will fall out. Then try restarting. Hopefully this time it will start. Good luck...
