November 12, 20169 yr Bad when the most expensive part of the hunt was Lunch. Town about 17 miles south of here, has a few antique stores......Snuck out of the house and motored down thataway... One place is called The Boston. A few things were downstairs, but there is a second floor.......ow,ouch, yeee-yipe! Made it! Most of the floor is for a couple tool sellers...mostly gold-plated tools..... A lot of the tools I didn't either need, or already had. Picked a couple drill bits, though.....was walking away.....found a better, less pitted one, for the same money....Waddled downstairs, did one more walk through, sometimes helps to go in a different direction, in case I missed some...thing......like a 4' long transistional jointer plane.....$40? Ah...NOPE. paid for my two items.....$4,23 counting tax. She even wrapped them up in Bubble wrap! So.... what bits did I find? Well, the skinny one says it is an Irwin No. 1 US of A The larger one says it is an Irwin No. 22, US of A The one I put back on the shelf was a large one, but was way to pitted to be of use. Nor was there any markings on it ( worn off) The other stores had a few items, but were a bit too high priced.....not too bad a day?

Well glad you made it up & BACK DOWN the stairs OK...sounds like some of the shops around here...they think "vintage" is another term for 23 carat gold plated... 6 hours ago, steven newman said: did one more walk through, sometimes helps to go in a different direction, in case I missed some...thing. We've got to be related Steve...brothers with different parents... I do the same thing for the same reason...like circling around for the "kill" ...however after a few stops, in/out of the truck & up/down stairs, one pass gets to be enough. Nice find on your expansive bits and at good price...I just re-found one today I'd stashed back waiting clean-up. Now that I know where it's at, I'll take a look and see what kind it is...thinking an old Craftsman??
November 13, 20169 yr Author Went to wire wheel the little bit of rust.......found out that the "Patina" was really just.....Clearcoat. I HATE Clearcoat! Wire wheel all that nasty stuff off. and found a few more rusty pits than what were showing. Trying to hide stuff? Figures, now that the Book of Auger Bits has been done....I bring home even more bits to stash away..oh well. "Found" a 3'+ jointer plane on the floor at one store.....I could have use it for parts...but at $40? Pass. Another store had Handyman and Firestone planes.......basically the smae thing.....way too much for them. Habitat Restore was looked through.....nothing I really needed....or already had.
November 13, 20169 yr I have a couple of those bits. Have not looked to see who made them. The intricacy of them is amazing and I can get a pretty fair result with one of them.
November 14, 20169 yr Nice find. I have a couple. I tried cutting the end off of one to use in the drill. Works OK in a half inch drill I have that can be set at low RPMs.
November 15, 20169 yr Author Hmm, I think I might have just the drill for these two... The bigger one is a 14" sweep. Kind of a mutt & Jeff thing..
November 19, 20169 yr Nice find. Last trip to flea market yielded a light with a magnifier built in for $3.00. Love this thing. Really magnifies objects and it is first rate to find splinters and remove them.
