November 11, 20169 yr Some time ago I saw in a woodworking magazine a box similar to this one that gave me the idea to make one. Herb
November 11, 20169 yr Author Popular Post To unlatch the top, it has a double sliding dovetail . First the bottom slide is pushed in towards the front. Then on the left side the bottom dovetail is slid to the right. This releases the lid and the lid then slides off. Herb
November 11, 20169 yr Yet another project beyond verbal description! I love the contrast detail on/within the screw hole plugs...don't think anybody would want to bang that beauty around the factory floor... Thanks again Herb for your inspiration. Edit add: just now saw the second round of pics...just double what I said above! Edited November 11, 20169 yr by Grandpadave52
November 11, 20169 yr Sweet Herb. The lid could double as a table to set your Kool-Aid on if you are on a picnic.

Dave, the top plugs are made with the Veritas Plugger, a tapered reamer used to repair screw holes and you sharpen the dowels in a pencil sharpener. http://www.veritastools.com/Products/Page.aspx?p=152 Then the hole in the dowel blank is plugged with a round toothpick to give it that look. The bottom ones are just dummies to make it look like the slides are also doweled. I use this a lot on boxes as a decorative feature. It is a great little tool for fixing stripped out screws. November 12, 20169 yr Author Here is a mock-up of the sliding dovetails. I had the problem of both being on the same elevation on the box and came up with a simple solution to allow them to intersect and slide. They only had to slide less than 3/8" to release the top. The first picture is locked, second one is unlocked. Herb

Thanks Herb for the info...I'd never seen this (not surprising) tool before...pretty cool. The detail effect it gives adds a great touch of contrast and craftsmanship. Great idea using for visual enhancement versus the intended purpose. I had quit using toothpicks for my non-visible stripped hole debacles replacing with bamboo skewers and glue...probably wouldn't work well here with the tubular end grain once finished... Keep the projects coming...my dried up old brain is trying to soak up all these ideas and creativity...learning lots.

Yes, Dave, you can use any size dowel up to 1/2" and sharpen they to fit the tapered hole. There are other similar systems out there to ream the holes, but you have to buy the tapered dowels from the same source. I also use the same dowels (leadless pencils), to make the continuous wood hinges for boxes, they run about 5/16' in diam. Herb Edited November 13, 20169 yr by Dadio
November 13, 20169 yr Double WOW on that project! Your choice of wood is great and the intricate joinery is just fantastic.
