November 8, 20169 yr Popular Post After the fellow at the little sawmill got his deck furniture, he asked me to make him a cabinet and book shelf for his office. He had a jag of red wood and offered to pay me in some air dried lumber he had stored, mostly maple, a little dog wood, and some wild cherry. He couldn't make up his mind whether he wanted the book shelves above the cabinet or setting on the floor. So I solved that problem for him. I made the cabinet with a finished top, and the book shelves with a base molding to fit on top of the cabinet ,that way each piece could be used together or separately. Sort of like a hutch. The redwood is finished in orange shellac, he wanted the red to stand out. The back and doors are made from 1/2" thick redwood T&G I milled on the table saw. just barely had enough material, had to make the back out of the leftovers, that is why it looks sort of ruff. November 8, 20169 yr Outstanding work! Great Pictures and now the questions. What is your finishing schedule for this project. any dyes used? any stains used? Orange shellac, how many coats, sprayed, wiped or brushed. Any clear finish over the shellac?

Thanks ,Mike, for the compliments. I am not an authority on finishing. No dyes, no stain, just Orange Shellac the one with the Bullseye on the can,(Zinser)? 3 coats /day,sanding between coats up to 400g on 3rd coat, next day, one more coat. done All coats brushed on. November 8, 20169 yr Very nice pieces. We do not get redwood here except in the big store outdoor furniture. I did not know redwood had that heavy grain in it.

This redwood came from a lone tree in a school yard. They did an expansion on the school and removed it. It was near 4' in diameter at the base and went about 80 ft in the air. The bottom tapered fast in the first 20' or so from 48" down to around 24". it had limbs as low as 6' off the ground. The big wide growth rings indicate it was a fast growing tree and since it was standing alone had plenty of sunshine all way around. Plus with the rainfall we get had plenty of water, not like a forest tree that has to compete with other close by trees for water and sunshine. Herb
November 8, 20169 yr Another outstanding project Herb...don't know how much lumber you got out of the deal, but he got one heck of deal on his end. Thanks for sharing with us.
November 8, 20169 yr Beautiful work and the shellac finish is spot on. Thanks for posting the pictures.
November 9, 20169 yr Those are awesome! I really like the simple yet elegant lines. Reminds me of Shaker furniture.
November 10, 20169 yr I like that a lot. Did you make any way to fasten that top to the base...just curious..
