I had purchased the Porter Cable router with both fixed base and plunge base.  I mounted the router in my table.

The chips and dust now have a way to get into the space between the router motor and router base.  Binding it up terrible.

i have to pull out the router and force it to separate every time I need to change the cutter height.

Any suggestions on a solution.  I thought of a oring that will stick to the motor and will move when the base is moved.

But the o-ring just bound up also.  I think the rubber sticks to the aluminum too much.

I will be getting a better dust collector shortly but wanted to know if anyone else had this problem and what the solution was.

Michael, wrist are you using for dust and chip extraction at this time? 

I have a feeling this is a low performing dust collection issue. But these issues can improve with proper configuration, even with an under performing collector. Pictures would help allot.

Before I made a router lift, I had a similar problem. I found that the aluminum of the fixed base and that of the router body would get scored/galled. I would lightly sand the surfaces. A thin coating of dry lube helped some.

polish the mating surfaces between the base and the motor housing... and I mean polish....

after the polishing, furniture paste wax what you just polished...

also check to see if the locking lever is adjusted a schosh too tight...

 

 

Stick how will polishing help.  When the chip or dust falls in between and locks the router base and case together will the polish make it easy to the separate or does the polish help stop the entrapment.

the castings on the router are ''rough''....

rub two pieces of sandpaper together... don't slide well do they...

the coarseness of the castings grab the dust and the dust behaves like the grit on sandpaper...

don't forget to wax and check to see if the locking lever is adjusted a schosh too tight.
