Auger Bit Box, page 3

Well...Mister Gumption finally caught up to me,  there goes playing hooky for tonight.

Had a few more grooves to mill..

Groove no.2.JPG

Fought the grain on both of these....as for the third groove..

third groove.JPG

It was getting to be a bit of a stretch, so I dug out the cam rest, and gave it a test drive, too.    The last two?    I had to turn the blank 180 degrees, and come in from the other side..

fourth groove.JPG

The grain was a lot better to work with.   Made that groove with just a single setting.  Groove #5 soon followed.   Time to make a holder for the shanks to sit in..

holder block.JPG

Marked out where each bit was, bandsaw to make a bunch of cuts.   Chisel to knock out the waste, and pare things smooth.   Test fit on the holder end..

test fit holder.JPG

Something like this.  I could also mark where to cut the outside pieces at, and then give them a test fit...

test fit sides.JPG

So I could see what needed trimmed where.    Glue & nails, might as well get the glue up started..

glue up start.JPG

Glue and nails, and a few clamps.    Kept working my way around, had to trim a few places.  Then a forest of clamps...

clamped up.JPG

Begining to think I should have done the first two this way......might have been a little easier?    Tried out the bits..

loaded up.JPG

Seems to look a little better?   Still have enough pieces to make the fourth page...

page 4.JPG

But....I think it can wait a day.   Will need to change the cutter in the Stanley 45, first.     The blank needs to be flattened out.   Scrub plane then a smooth plane for that.  Both faces.  Yep, it can wait a day or so.

Stay tune to this Batty Channel.....same Bat Time.

Very nice!

Seemed to have caught a bug of some sort.....sore throat, bad cough,headache.......some SOB ran over me with a truck feeling.    Might be a day or two, before #4 gets done...

Sorry to hear Steven. Unfortunately 'tis the season...made it's rounds through this household a couple times already...I've managed to stay clear so far...kids drag it home from school.

Take care...stock up on Walgreen's version of Thera-Flu...

Having a very hard time, finding latches  for this box.    Would like to find ones like R. Jennings used on theirs.......striking out, so far,    BORG?  Nope.   Lee Valley? Nope.....Hobby Lobby?  Nope.....what do I need to look them up as ?   Have the hinges, need the latches for out in front....

I doubt IF small brass hook & eye would do the job......

How about a hasp? Find a couple the right length and lock all 3 leaves at once.

Try Ebay, Steve might find some old ones too, but they have good prices on "Buy it now" new too. Another search  for Trunk hardware, lots of replica stuff on those sites.

I'll do a bit of shopping later this week.....

Right now, I needed to get "page 4"  done.    I found out I needed to cut a channel into the under side of the blank.  So, after cutting the blank to a somewhat final size, and flattenning one face, I used that Stanley #45 as a hollow cutter.   Test fits until almost good enough.    Didn't want to go too thin.    That #20 auger bit IS HUGE!     Ok, I then flattened the other face, and a bit of jointing on the edge grain..  Been having issues with the bench dogs,,,,about time to make new ones ( might be the next shop project?)

Have enough scrap pieces sitting around, doing nothing anyway.    Added a few to the bench...

I switched out bits to make a square groove..

square bit.JPG

I had to use the depth stops for this cutter.    Skates would be inside the cut.   A look at the scrap pile?

scrap on a bench.JPG

The big square thing to the right is screwed down to the vise's jaw.    I can clamp an unclamp with the vise.  The other is a stop.  I added a third piece, to keep things from sliding sideways.    Groove is a bit rough, thanks to a knot or two in the way.    45s do not like knots.    Groove #2 was a bit better...no knots..

groove 2.JPG

Problem was getting these deep enough.   Groove #3 ..needed the cam restback out..

cam rest.JPG

And for groove #4, I rotated the blank around, and came in from the other side.....

groove 4.JPG

And that will do it for the grooves.   There is a handful of smaller bits, I can put those into a drawer in the tool box.   Set about to add the outside pieces with nails and glue.....had the remake one end piece...fingers didn't match up just right.    Finally got the mess into the clamps..

clamped up.JPG

As you can see....I did get some more hinges installed.

hinged up.JPG

Have to work on the gap-osis.....Thinking since the bottom page is bass-ackwards.....maybe turn it around.    Maybe tomorrow, I can start a glue up for a lid.   Plain...or..fancified?   Hmmm?

I think that will do for one day's work in the shop?

Stay tuned....

Not the best picture , but I made my own.IMG_0680.JPG

You cannot see the open end of the latch for the handle. It is open like a hook and snaps onto the screw. OOPS the same thing holding the brace onto the top of the box.

Maybe later today, I might sneak down to the Dungeon Shop.    Have a glue up to remove from the clamps.      I think I have enough pine for a lid, but will need to glue things up... Maybe use a plane to "joint" the two edges?

Might go shopping for latches later this week.....prefer brass, or brass plated.    Not sure about a carrying handle, yet...

How about something like the carry handle on this? realize not brass, but might be able to find in brass/ plate. Take a stroll through your local Goodwill or other Thrift stores for something you might be able to re-purpose into a handle, leather or otherwise. Just a thought.

Couple more shots, to show what I am working with..

end view.JPG

Not a lot room for big latches.  I started with a 1 x 6 to make the outside pieces.   Or, about 5-1/2" tall.   I did a glue up of the lid today..

lid glue-up.JPG

End vise makes a great set of extra hands.   Will let that sit a while......need to add more hinges, too..

hinge side.JPG

Maybe thenI can work on gap control?

I had an entire post all typed out?    Where DID the words go?   Is this a sort of "Trick or Treat thing?

Maybe I will try to do the words again......NOT.

This was detailing the steps to get the blank for the lid all nice and flat.   Only needed two planes.

Somewhere out in cyperspace is my post........?  All that was left was the pictures.
