October 23, 20169 yr Popular Post As I promised in the wooden bar clamp thread, I put together the other contestants entries into the NW Woodworkers Assoc. Without a lot of dialog here are the pictures from 2014-2016. Herb Edited December 7, 20178 yr by Ron Dudelston tags added
October 23, 20169 yr ...and now I have a whole new respect for BORG 2x4's...thanks for sharing...the event must be a lot of fun...
October 23, 20169 yr Thanks Herb for the post. Really enjoyed reviewing it. As you said there are some really creative pieces by all participants. I assume Paul is your son? You "learned" him well!
October 23, 20169 yr Author Thanks for the comments, guys. It is a fun project. I wish we had more participation. We do it to get the membership involved in the club. We even changed the rules so that it wasn't a contest this year, it was more a show and tell, because we had feedback that the members were intimidated by the better woodworkers who always won the prizes of gift cards to either Rockler or Woodcraft. One I was really impressed with was the 2015 2nd place winner ,the red ribbon was wood and even the bow was wood shavings. Dave, Paul is my cousin, same age,and he is an engineer and does precision work, not too much, but what he does is outstanding. I am a production guy, I work out of my head, he is a drawing guy, rev.1,rev.2,rev.3, rev.4.........etc. The fellow who makes the bowls is an artist woodworker. He has his shop is in a spare bedroom, and he does a lot of turning. Most of his work resembles Dr. Suis items. He has had things featured across the country in art museums, books and magazines. The picture don't do him justice. The fellow who does the row boat, makes model rowboats and dingys from original plans and constructs them like the full sized ones. The fellow who made the candle holder and bird feeder is a retired engineer and he does a lot of furniture building, mostly from oak. He likes oak and he has made a lot of his own furniture for his home. His dad was a wood turner so he picked that up at a young age and does superb wood turning. We have a show and tell at every meeting, but this is more of a show and tell with rules, where everyone has to use the same material. One construction grade 2X4X8' long. A person can enter as many times as he wants, but each entry has to be a separate 2X4. Herb

I am a production guy, I work out of my head, he is a drawing guy, rev.1,rev.2,rev.3, rev.4.........etc OIC...I understand...I'm a production guy too having spent many years in Operations...even as an H-R person, it was mainly Operations Support; I just prefer the hands-on...although did attain my Manufacturing Engineer "stamp" which took care of all those Rev changes on the floor. Don't sell yourself short on the Engineering side based on that router table modification...you put way more engineering into that than the OEM. In addition to your clamp & rifle projects I really liked Paul's Asian box, Bill's bird-feeder especially with the incorporated copper work, Eric's puzzle is fantastic, and the great detail on the row-boat. Amazing what comes out of (1) 2x4. I assume the projects allows for a 2x4x8' and not 2x4x92-1/2" stud? Our club has a show & tell each meeting also, but never has had a 2x4 Challenge...great idea to pass along...we too have every skill level represented from me to the really talented & smart guys. A suggestion for your next "contest" is to enter everyone's name in a random draw for the Rockler/Woodcraft cards. Could be for each project completed and entered, person gets their name entered (increases opportunity plus projects) or everyone gets one chance as long as they complete and submit one entry. Just my $.02. Regardless, you did good on this thread! Great content!
October 23, 20169 yr Author Dave, any 2X4 not over 8' qualifys. It can be 10' long with 2' removed. That is a good suggestion, even with the "contest" part removed we didn't get any increase in participation. Also the rules allow for trim and other adornments to be from other materials. Thanks for the compliments,my dad had a welding/machine shop on the side, and I was his helper ever since I could walk. and I worked in a machine shop, building jigs and small parts before I went in the service, after I got out of the service I started as a carpenter apprentice.
March 1, 20179 yr Author I found the 2X4 challenge for 2013 Bonnie Kline won the prize with her stool, she is a wood turner. Herb http://nwwoodworkers.org/newsletters/September 2013 Newsletter.pdf Edited March 1, 20179 yr by Dadio
