Saturday Morning Quiz for 10/22/2016

Featured Replies

 Good Morning Friends,

Today's quiz another Geometric one; What is the name of the angle that always runs at 45 degrees and is used by military formations, bands, drill teams, drum and bugle corps as well pilots flying in formation?

Edited by Ralph Allen Jones

acute...

???

My high school geometry teacher was a Greek immigrant who came over with the proverbial $1.37 in his pocket and put himself through college to become a teacher.   I always had to put on a translation filter to understand some of his misconceptions due to learning English the same time he was learning math.   In angles. there are degrees (1/360 of a circle), minutes (1/60 of a degree) and seconds (1/60 of a minute).   He would always say "first minutes" and "second minutes."  He also confessed one day that he had a hard time at first understanding what made an angle good looking ("acute angle").   His favorite way ot expressing infinity or an infinite decimal was to walk across the blackboard saying,  "I could be an old man, writing, writing, writing..."

I miss him.  http://www.vindy.com/news/tributes/2011/nov/30/john-g-sofikiti/

Oblique.

"Right oblique, hup!"

I agree with Stick & Keith, acute.

There's a whole family of confusing terms:  https://www.mathsisfun.com/obtuse.html

Marching use is defined a bit differently than geometry.  Dunno.  All kind of obtuse to me.

"V" formation.

Well Guys,

Gene Howle, has given the answer I was looking for, however any oblique angle can be any angle between "0 and 90" degrees but is mostly use at 45 degrees.

Hope you enjoyed todays quiz.

22.5 degrees would be pi/8 radians.     I 8 a pi yesterday.

Q: What is the volume of an Italian dish with radius z and height a

A: pi*z*z*a

Hi guys, here is what I have on an oblique angle;

An oblique triangle does not have a right angle and can also be classified as anacute triangle or an obtuse triangle.

To solve oblique triangles, use the laws of sine and cosine. There are four different potential scenarios:

I think if you leave this part of the question in, the answer would be acute.

Take that part out and its obtuse.

Remembering my days in marching band..."Oblique"!

Answer came before I could agree with Gene - yep, too many years in the band and Air Force

"kitty wanpus" also works

Gene - thought you would ;)

Mom used to say s omething was kitty wampus when it was out of kilter. Never heard kitty wampas as a marching command, though.:D
