October 19, 20169 yr Popular Post I started a project about 15 years ago. It involved exotic and domestic woods cut in a special way and then joined to make small tiles. Some tiles were cut and recut. I would work at it a while and put it aside for a time, even months. I'd always get it back out and continue to make these small tile. They are about inch and half by 3". My intention was to make a small table out of them. However my biggest problem was how to arrange them in a way that looked good and maintained a flow of color. I had them every way I could think of. Didn't like any. I asked my wife, who is a quilter, to help. She came up with several ideas. You can see a couple posted. I liked the final one. Then she said something that made a lot of sense. Don't make a table, this should be displayed as a picture. If it didn't work, I could still make a table. It has been hanging on our wall for 10 years now and has lost much of its color.
October 20, 20169 yr Ron you get more out of pieces of scrap wood than any three people. Your creative vision is remarkable. This piece is incredible no matter which way it is viewed. Absolutely fantastic...Thanks for sharing your creativity with us!
October 20, 20169 yr I could see why you would work at it and then let it sit for a while - I would have to do that so my eyes could uncross. Great Job!!
October 20, 20169 yr Author You can see how much the color has faded. The tiles were very bright back then. That is why I asked about sanding to return the color. The tiles are slightly less than a quarter inch thick. I got all kinds of advise about how to glue them to avoid warping due to expansion, but decided to do it my way. I glued them down with goop. It remains flexible for many years. So far no warping or splitting. If I ever do make a small table out of it, I will sand it lightly and apply the 2 part epoxy to cover it , protect and give it a shine.
