Chicago Electric Right Angle Grinder Stopped Working

Featured Replies

My grinder just stopped working, I remember this happened about 5 years ago, and I was able to get it to work again by pushing a button, I think, to reset the trip. Now I cannot find it! Does anyone have one these grinders, and if you do, where the heck is the trip button?

Please see manual attached, I could not find any diagram of a trip button in the manual, yet the manual does state if equipped, you can reset the trip.

Warning, clicking on this link downloads the manual to your PC.

I looked mine over and I don't see a reset switch anywhere. Maybe it's the brushes. Seems that's the only replaceable item.

Thanks Lew, guess I'll give them a try.

Hope you get it fixed for less than the thirty bucks a new one costs.

Heck, you needed to go to town, anyway.;)

Well, it lasted for 5 years, that's 6 bucks a year, not bad. Looks like I'll be heading to the BORG and purchase a new one, but probably a DeWalt or something with a name on it. The thing about grinders, they are pretty simple machines, all of them are kind of built the same, not much to go wrong, errrr, so I thought!

Never saw a reset button on a hand held tool.  Might want to blow some air into and around the switch area.  Pull the brushes and check they move easily and are not worn out.  Stuck brush will stop it too

John, I've got 2 different models of the Chicago Electric (H-F) 4-1/2 and also 4"; none have a reset. 1 of the 2, 4-1/2"  is the $9.99 w/coupon version. I've never had minutes trouble with it and I've used it hard...it fails, I'll buy another for that kind of service. It's outlasted (2) Craftsman Professional 4-1/2" models..Agree with Lew on the brushes...both of mine came with service replacement brushes...hope I never need them cause I'm not sure where they're at now. That was over 5 years ago. :P

Thanks Dave, I gotta say, it's just a simple tool, perhaps I'll take a walk to HF and see what they have on sale. If I could land one for 10 bucks, that'd be the way to go for me right now. Thanks for the feedback.

my Milwaukee and Bosch RTA grinders have been going for decades.... 3½ ish....

Like all Milwaukee tools, their angle grinders are brutes, designed for years of industrial use. But, they are really heavy. For the kind of sculpting use most woodworkers need, a lighter tool is desired. My Makita is a bit less powerful but about a pound lighter and has all the power I need. After a few hours of use, your hands and arms appreciate the difference.

Look in some magazines for a coupon and take it with you.

I hadn't seen one before, by my one neighbor has a high speed electric die grinder and it heats up and stops...   he hits the reset when it cools down and it starts right up again...  btsom why they didn't properly cool it.   probably would have cost 50 cents more.
