October 8, 20169 yr Popular Post Band saw boxes are fun to make. Since I've been asked to show some of my work, these are the last 5 that I've made, plus one that I had posted earlier. These are all designs by Lois Keener Ventura.. Woods used are Walnut, cherry, rosewood ,and a bit of spalted maple. Hope you like them
October 8, 20169 yr BS boxes are such fun to make, great job like them all and you did good on matching woods and on the finish. keep them coming. The thing I like about this kind of project is that you can use your imagination to no end for designing them. Also you don't need plans, just start cutting. Herb
October 9, 20169 yr Very nice Al. I really like those and especially like the ninth and tenth pictures with the spalted handles.
October 9, 20169 yr Author Thank you for the comments everyone. Gene, The lotus is a beautiful box, and definitely a challenging project. I've considered making it, but from comments I've heard, the total assembly is just too big to put on a dresser or night stand. Still, who knows, maybe I'll take a shot at it. If it's like the other boxes, once it's made. everybody wants one. The tsunami has been very popular, and I've made several of them. Edited October 9, 20169 yr by It Was Al B
October 9, 20169 yr I like them all Al, but the first one for it's simple design, the 2nd one for the wood, contrast & finish, and the last one because without the drawers it just reminds me of that old fashion ribbon candy. All very well done! Thanks for sharing.
October 9, 20169 yr Beautiful Al! I also have those on my do list. I bought her book but that's as far as I got. I like your selection of wood and the finish is great.
October 9, 20169 yr Hey, Al. Go for it. Our DIL has hers on her dresser and it doesn't take up too much room. For it's size though, it doesn't offer a lot of storage. But it is a beautiful piece.
October 10, 20169 yr Like them all. A mix of some simple ones and some not so simple. Your cutting is so clean. Have only tried 2 and the cuts were very wavy. What blade are you using and what saw is it??? Any secrets???
October 10, 20169 yr Author Thanks Dave, Joe and John, John, My band saw in the Craftsman 14", made by Rikon..When I started making these boxes, I was using the Timberwolf 3/16" 4TPI blade. I've now gone to the 3/16" 10TPI blade, which does help to make the cut a bit smoother. That said, there is still quite a bit of sanding required to remove all of the saw cut marks. I try to minimize sanding in the draw cutouts to prevent making the openings too wide. Actually, filing removes most of the interior irregularity. ( Small flat, triangular, and half round files). but on the outer surface, I will sand all that is needed to provide a smooth surface, starting with the belt sander, then going to the ROS where possible and finally hand sanding..
October 13, 20169 yr Very nice Al. I see you named them. Never even thought of doing that to the ones I made.. Come to think of it, I never named any dog or cat we had, it was just hey, quit peeing on the wood. And my wife already had a name when she showed up. I was sure glad of that......
