Old toolbox finds

Featured Replies

While going thru an old toolbox I came across these items. The rule speaks for itself, but I have no idea what the spoon was used for. The handle of the spoon is made of ivory. Possibly a gardening tool??

Looks like a shoe spoon. And with a nice one I could see an ivory handle. Great find here.

Pretty good guess Gerald...think I would have to agree.

The Lufkin mini calipers are cool Al, I remember we had a set very similar on the parts counter at the first John Deere dealership I worked at...that was back in 1973...the dealership first opened in the late 1930's. Everybody used that set...sometimes they'd get "lost" for a few days, then would be located in one of the parts bins or where all the belts were hanged. Great finds...Thanks for sharing.

The spoon is much too small  and deep to be a shoe spoon. The width is only about 1" . The bottom edge is actually quite sharp. The metal was severely rusted , as you can determine by the pits remaining after I had cleaned most of the rust off.

You may have a candidate for the "What's It" Al. If the handle is ivory (and very possible with your proximity to shipping lanes), then this could be an implement from the far East. An ivory handle would seem pretty extravagant for a gardening tool. Since the edge is sharp is the blade heavy/thick enough to have been used as some sort of gouge?? Maybe for hollowing bowls, spoons, cups, chair bottoms??? It appears is has an offset or double offset handle.

A shoe horn from the Far East?  I thought they wear sandals.

Maybe it is for hollowing melons also known as melon baller
