Good Monday Morning Patriot Woodworkers! September October 3rd, 2016

Good Monday Morning Patriot Woodworker's!

It's great to be alive, woke up this morn and found the same beautiful lady that's been next to me over the last 25 years, I still know what day it is, I counted the fingers on my hands, and I wiggled my toes, check, check and check, all is well! Time to get to work!

So, what are you all up to this grand day? What have you done in your shops over the weekend? What did you do in life over the weekend? What are going to do during this coming week! We love to know, we love to keep tabs, and we also really love to see any images you may have produced over the weekend or anytime for that matter. Projects, honey-do's, heck, the ball game you went to! We'd love to see it all. So step up and show us what you have been doing.

I was able to get in the shop for a spell and make some progress on a Claro Walnut Rocker, and I made pretty good progress. There is a topic for the rocker going on right now. And I spent much of the weekend getting my Professional Land Surveyors application started and on its way for me to sit for the exam in April 2017. It was a pretty busy weekend now that I think of it!

Here are some happenings in your beloved TPW community.

coffee/grub 1st and then afterwards, I haven't gotten that far yet...

Saturday morning my brother came over and we sat and solved the world's problems for a few hours and then went to a local Italian restaurant and had a nice lunch.  Young fellow across the street been trying to get an old Lincoln running for a couple weeks now.  Went over last week and found the points weren't closing so no spark.  He assured him and his dad had the timing right so I didn't argue.  Saturday I went back over, showed him how to line up TDC and set the distributor right to get it to fire and it did.  He is happy camper.  Sunday I walked around and assessed a few things that need done but did nothing much.  I did play with the hobby lathe to see how much was involved in making brass tips for the tops I will be making.  More on that later but I pretty much just wasted away the day and it still felt good.

Went deer hunting Saturday morning and all day Sunday. Girlfriend came down and went with me yesterday - 1st time hunting. We saw deer, but no bucks. Just nice to get out in the brush and woods though. The vine maples are an awesome red right now. Our colors here, are nothing compared to the Eastern US though - we are pretty much yellow and browns.

Did some shop time on Saturday afternoon - working on the drawers for the router table cabinet - will continue that this week. And, oh yeah, back to work at the day job

I did work in the shop yesterday, but not on anything woodworking related. My daughter had bought 4 new tires for her little Chevy HHR and was going to get it aligned. The shop said that she needed new lower control ams before they could do the alignment as the bushings were shot and they only come in as a whole unit for her car. So I had a 25% off coupon for Pep Boys for parts purchase so I bought the 2 lower control arms which saved my daughter about $60 (she will pay me when she gets paid). So yesterday I did the install of the lower control arms. It was not rocket science, but it did give me fits on the first one. There were only 4 bolts to deal with but it took me about an hour and a half to finally figure out how to get the back bolt through into the frame. But once I got it figured the other lower control arm went smooth. So it took me a total of 4 hours to get them done. 3 hours for the first one and 1 hour for the 2nd one. So today I moving very slow and hurting  all over from crawling around the garage floor. But my daughter is happy as it saved her $200 for the install from the shop. The things we do for our kids

I have to ask the question, "How old is this young man?"  If he is very young then he probably didn't know what points were.

He is probably in his early 20s.  He new what they were when I got to him but didn't know how to set them.  He really likes to mess with engine powered vehicles but like you say he has a lot to learn for the old stuff.  I admire his want to get his hands dirty.  Don't see that much anymore.

Yes it is

Received a special order for a 17" Army retirement plaque.  Think I'll go down and make some talcum powder in a piece of 3/4" white oak

My weekend was not that great . Went out with the chain saw to cut some turning blanks from wood going bad. The saw did not want to stay running and engine was smoking ....think my 35 year old Stihl may have bought it this time. Finished taking off the rotten sapwood on some cherry logs with a draw knife.

Our weekend was great. On Friday, we drove to Tucson and delivered the first chair and ottoman to our son and DIL...pictures tomorrow...had a fantastic Italian meal and then went to bed. Then, Saturday, our other son and family met us all downtown and we went to a Home Show. Had some great street food. Spent the rest of the day hanging out watching football til bedtime.

Sunday morning, DIL made a wonderful breakfast. Later, we all congregated at the other son's house for lunch. Wife and both DILs went to Costco and the guys and grandkids enjoyed each other. Found out our 10 year old grandson qualified for a youth aviation program. He'll study aeronautics, navigation and, eventually, get a private pilot's licence.

This morning at 06:00 we started for home. Made it in the usual 5 hours.

Tomorrow, is sharpening day. Several planes and chisels sorely need attention. Wednesday, starts assembly of Morris #2. Ottoman #2 is already done.

Kudos to you for showing him the ropes.  Well done sir.

Thank you.

No woodworking today, bought a new H & K VP 9 and went to the range to try it out. Sweet!

 SWEET!!!

Worked on a jig for the band saw off and on for a few hours, finally decided the band saw was the wrong tool for the job. This afternoon I received a shipment(2 small pcs) of baltic birch plywood so I started cutting segments for plywood Christmas ornaments. I'll start gluing them up tomorrow. That's about it.

Steve

Decided it was time to replace the blades and mower drive belt on my John Deere lawn tractor.  My tractor isn't a model sold at HD but they actually had the blades and belt in stock. That saved a trip to my JD dealer.  My replacement knees didn't like the job, but we got it done in about 3 hrs.

Perfect!  We have all day to do those kind of jobs.  No rush.

Late getting here...Saturday 1/2 day or so was shuttling grand-daughters to/from sporting events. We had heavy fog, then drizzle 'til mid afternoon so no mowing. Spent Sat. PM picking up, cleaning & putting away tools and other stuff in the garage from various projects. Sunday after church, ran a few errands...still too wet to mow, so some more organizing in garage, then got cracking on some block planes I've had stashed (pictures to come) for some time. Also made a pass through the garden hauling in a few tomatoes and red, yellow & purple bell peppers; not a peck but couple handfuls of purple peppers. :D

Hadn't notice the On-Off line indicator until read the OP...Like it! As for the picture, Family Services would probably intervene today citing child labor laws. ;) Where were they when I was growing up on the farm? :P

Best fortune John on your pursuit of your Professional Surveyor's License.

To continue what I started yesterday. Went to the saw shop today. The sad news.......My 028 Stihl died. Post mortem showed scratched and carboned up cylinder. Good news I am now the owber of a new MS 250 and they are on sale for $50 off list. That made it only $60 more than the small ones so who could resist that?
