Just over a year ago, the house I am in had an upstairs fire....

Started in a waste basket.   Sooo, after a lot of cleanup, and haggling with what the landlord call insurance

knee wall.JPG

Knee wall went from plaster&  lath to drywall..

That black item is the closet door....lath is gone..

Drywall tape and mud.  Had to blend in where the old met the new..

Two coats of Killz primer.    Moved my Mitresaw upstairs to work on some trim..

Needed to place to stash the hammer, after all..

I also had to trim out the closet doorway.     When I can find a picture of the trimmed out opening, I can post that.    One other room had smoke damage.    Had to clean, patch, prime and paint it as well.  Landlord wound up paying for the work, along with doing a lot of the painting.   Took 4 long months to get my son moved back into his room.

Also, since one firefighter liked to run up the stairs with his axe hanging from his belt....had to patch a few holes in the stairway.   Hose broke the railing loose.  Water damage down stairs....and the Insurance company dragging their feet the entire time.  House is on N. Elm street.....The Nightmare on Elm Street?

Sure sounds like a nightmare on Elm Street.

Sorry to hear about the fire and the loss to your place. I hope the insurance will come around and make it better.

Fire is a scary deal.  Glad you got it back in shape.  Looks good.

Trimmed out around the closet opening. Still need to do a NEW closet door.   Bedroom door took a couple coats of Kilz Primer

trim details.JPG

Not the best, but it will do.   Landlord liked it.   There is a kneewall, with a small door.    They had to remove the trim around it, to get rid of the burnt lath, and paper-wool insulation.    Firefighters had already dug into that wall.  Had to drywall  back to match existing lath/plaster.

new light.JPG

Since the original light was a bit on the melted side....I installed a replacement.   This IS the only light fixture in the bedroom.   Added a pine scrap to the corner of the closet....doorknob was hitting the new drywalled corner.   T&G floorboards had swelled up from the water damage.    Had to bang them back down, then screw them in place, as the nails had pulled out.    There is a front window to this room.

It did have a windowA/C unit in it.     Firefighters just kicked the thing out the window ( the thing still works) and broke the double pane, double hung windows out.  Plastic frames were a bit damaged from the heat, but the glass was intact....until the fire department got done......Landlord had to go out and BUY a new window unit...the window, not the A/C.   Then we had to demo what was left, and install like a new window.    Had to add fillers at the top and bottom, to fill a few open spaces.    New sill new trim was my job.  Then two coats of Kilz on the walls and ceiling.  Let it air out for a while, then Craig moved back in to his room.   4 months of sleeping on a couch downstairs...took a toll on the couch..
