September 15, 20169 yr Some maybe time to "refresh" the cutting edges? Some of the chisels are in very bad shape, almost need to regrind a new edge on them. Maybe try one @ 30-35 degrees, instead of my usual 25... Checked the iron on a Fulton plane I had cleaned up awhile back.....handles had yellow fuzzy stuff growing out of them when I paid a dollar for it at a yard sale. Threw the rear handle out. Thought I had sharpene the iron.......hmmm.....one corner sticks out further than the other, and both stick out further than the middle? Grinder to make a new, SQUARE edge. Set up the Veritas MK1 at 25 degrees ( fine for a plane iron) and set up the belt sander in the vise. Run the jigged up iron on the running sander, working on the back and the bevel ( ouch, got a bit warm on the fingertips) then a few trips on the 600 medium Oil stone. Then onto the sandpapers up to 2.5K grit. I also looked at the edge of the chipbreaker....only touching in one SMALL spot? beltsander to flatten that out a bit, then oil stone until the gaps go away. Put the pieces back together.. Rear handle IS a loaner. Might, IF I get bored, make a new one out of that chunk of Walnut sitting there. Iron is a bit sharp.. But I couldn't find the strop. Maybe IF I do, I can work on it a bit more. Not bad for a dollar plane? Trying to get it like the other plane that was sold at Sears On that nickel-plated lever cap, there is a "Golden Oval" with Craftsman in it. Label on handle says it is a Craftsman Tools item. Under the "hood" this is a Millers Falls made for sears #3...their No.8 clone. yes, I can see through that shaving. Not sure IF I can do the same for this Made-in-England Stanley #4 though It might need a complete make-over. Good thing I have the much older Stanley #4, type 13 SW era plane tuned up. Rosewood does feel better than black plastic in a handle... Might take a few days, but things need to be sharpening back up, never know what wood will show up in this shop....BTW, that groovey plane sole in the background? Belongs to a Stanley #5 Cambered iron Jack plane, set up like the one Chris Schwarz has....without all the etching on the sides...Seems to be about the same age, if not older, as the Type 13 #4. As long as it isn't on a Monday, I might get something done... Stay tuned, might even do a step-by-step thingy.....
