8 vets a day commit suicide

Featured Replies

I was watching the National news 2 days ago and they reported that 8 Veterans commit suicide every day. WHY? Is there something someone like me could do to help?

We very seldom hear about the circumstances of these Veterans. But one thing's for sure, our Veterans deserve a system that fully supports their needs. There seems to enough money available for every other pet project. I'd bet if military service was a requirement for public office things would be different.

Preston,

Write your congressperson. Tell them this a major concern of yours.

Suggest that all congresspersons be REQUIRED to use the Veterans Health services and only the VA (and only the local clinic/hospital unless it is a verified emergency) for their health care needs.

Thank you for your concern for Vets. The popular culture has changed quite a bit since I joined in '77. At my first duty station (Ft Knox) there was a sign on the lawn of a local church (Church of Christ) that read " Soldiers please attend Church on post", this, among other things, was the last straw, haven't been to church since.

I am so glad that today's service persons do not face the same disgraceful public treatment those of us from the Vietnam era had to endure. I guess I'm lucky, the VA hospital I go to is a great place and the doctors and nurses do the best they can with what they are given.

I called the VA this morning and talked to one person who transferred me to another person. I had to leave an e-mail and am still waiting 6 hours later for a response. I want to know what I can do for a VET that needs help!!!!!!!

The VA called back, finally. The news cast said 8 Vets a day but while talking to the VA it is 20 suicides a day. They don't need me to help in any way right now. They said I could help with the suicide hotline which is for everyone. I want to do something for VETS.

We have a local veterans affairs organization (county wide) maybe there's something similar in your area.
