I liked the top of the last three clocks I made so I started with that picture then add my own style to the bottom half. Before I started making the carvings I would buy them and trace around them so this time I would do some of the same. Faster this way.

As I was starting to carve the wood a little thought said look online for a dial I can scroll saw out so I won't have to use the expensive brass with glass which makes it look too modern anyway. It might even look better since this is supposed to look like a cave man built it.   I wanted to start with a baby blue stain. Well wood has a mind of its own and will change as you add more things on top of that light blue look. This is the first time I put the pendulum inside a hole that has carving around it and the space was almost too thin. The clock is 18 x 15". And its all hard maple. Great wood for carving but maybe hard on the grinding wheels. I used an ole back plate for a drawer pull for the shape of the pendulum bob. All the carving was done with a dremel with a flexible shaft. I do have a Foredom but I never use it, to bulky.

I never know when I start something what the end colors will be. Just keep on till I am happy then stop. That'sIMG_7804.JPGIMG_7807.JPGIMG_7843.JPGIMG_7879.JPGIMG_7882.JPGIMG_7888.JPGIMG_7908.JPGIMG_7909.JPG

the joy of making things for yourself.

Let me know if I take too much room with the pictures and I will delete them!!

Awesome work! You must have the patience of Job.

We love pictures, keep them coming!!

As Lew said, Awesome!

No problem with more pictures. Remember they're worth a 1,000 words!

They just keep getting better. The pendulum is a blur what does it have on it looks phosphorescent?

Nice job Patch. I like the way you sanded the background, it has a pillow effect to it.

Looks awesome!

Patience of Job is right. Plus the eye an skill of a true artist.

Beautiful work.

Glad to see you up & at 'em again Patch. As always your creativity and attention to detail is beyond words. I'm glad your here and sharing your journeys with both old and new friends. Keep 'em coming! Dave, aka Carl ;)

Thanks for the kind words you all.

Gerald, the pendulum bob, as it is called?, was a metal backing plate for a drawer pull. I laid it in the printer then enlarged a picture of it then scroll sawed it out. I used Hobby Lobby glitter held in there with a layer of elmer's glue. After the glue and glitter sits in there for a few minutes then taking an 1/8" dowel or something and jab it around mixing both together then top off that with a little more glitter. Then before it goes in the house, blow off the loose glitter. The jabing will make a hilly area and will make the glitter more glittery, if that's a word.

I posted the sequence  of steps because nothing is past plain ole wood working . A scroll saw and a Dremel with a flexible shaft was all it took. I don't use any Dremel bits for they are junk and won't last one small job. The bits came from Wood Carvers Supply and I will get the numbers or the bits if interested.

This in the very best kind of a project for someone to learn carving, which is really grinding for I used no knives just electricity. And I can explain more, with pictures,on that subject if interested.....

I want to see more guys do this also. I just started carving less than a year now and only a little skin is missing, plus some fingernails some what shorter but it is more fun than any other wood mangling I have ever done...

Dave this site is a good one except I never know where my pictures are headed once I push the button.

What's wrong with where they're at?  They look good to me Jess.

Dan, nothing wrong with where they are.. Its just that the three pictures of the windmill, whirly gigs, took me three days to find them after I pushed the button sending them on their way. And the tractor with the whirly gig on top, it should have gone to the same place as the other three.

I can see me running a CNC machine. I would probably have the walls of the shop cut down to four feet tall before I realized my machine was running.
