September 3, 20169 yr say you have a piece of stock that is a really odd measure and you wish to divide it into equal segments (5 for this exercise).... lay your tape/ruler on the stock and swing it diagonally till it reads 0 and a number easily divisible by 5 (# of segments)... dividing by 5 gives you the quotient (division solution) in whole numbers... 1, 2, 3, and so on... you may need to work in quarters and halves for doll houses and models... anyways,,, mark off the quotients,,,, remember to measure and mark from the same edge of the tape/ruler... w/ these marks in place you can use them to set your marking gauge, calipers, make a story pole or just measure perpendicular to them from the edge... here, 5 is an arbitrary number.. you can do this w/ any number you wish... ie.. 9'' stock and 11 segments... or 13 segments and so on... this also works if you want a siding job to ''break even'' and you don't want that odd rip in the mix...
