I stand up

I stand up, take off my hat, salute or put my right hand over my heart, and listen to my favorite song being played or sang. I am very proud to be an American.

Me too. But I hear the cops are out for woodworkers.

Always do as well and sometimes I'm the only one.  At a parage, I salute the flag as it goes by.  In NASCAR, there is an announcement before the National Anthem is sung - "Please stand, remove your hats, veterans hand salute as we play the National Anthem".

Proud American, Proud Patriot, Proud Veteran - Hmmmmm guess that just about says it all.

Fred, I like the request for veterans to hand salute.  I may have to incorporate that.

I stand up as well, and my hand over my heart. Of course, the hat comes off as well. Last June, a fight almost broke out by me at the local rodeo because a guy was upset that a person near me did not take off their hat. The security people separated the two before blows landed.

I was at a store waiting for my shopping wife. I was wearing an Air Force hat and a little boy about 4 or 5  came up to me and hugged my neck and said thank you. Now I'm big and tough, at least when I look into a mirror. I had a few tears over that one. The little boy run off to catch up to his folks and when he did all three of them waved.

I sure hope so!

For the ones of us that remember times in the "late 60s", veterans are soooooooooo much better off now that they/we have our respect back.  Yes, I'm proud to wear my Air Force hat and it is NOT to be thanked.

So happy on the flight back home in 72......until the "greeting" when I got off the plane in the states.....

When I walk past a flag pole, an pass within 6 steps of the flag flying there. I will present a hand salute until past it.

Liked the pole vaulter.   In the middle of his approach run, they played THE song.....he stopped dead in his tracks, faced the colors, and snapped to attention.    Commitment.....

Yes...I do stand to!

Hat is off..

Ron, this article actually gives credence and "permission" for the whole idea, not that we should need "permission" in the first place.

This is from a VA website.

New Law Authorizes Veterans’ Salutes during National Anthem

WASHINGTON -- Veterans and active-duty military not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem, thanks to changes in federal law that took effect this month.

“The military salute is a unique gesture of respect that marks those who have served in our nation’s armed forces,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake. “This provision allows the application of that honor in all events involving our nation’s flag.”

The new provision improves upon a little known change in federal law last year that authorized veterans to render the military-style hand salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag, but it did not address salutes during the national anthem.  Last year’s provision also applied to members of the armed forces while not in uniform.

Traditionally, members of the nation’s veterans service organizations have rendered the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving the national flag while wearing their organization’s official head-gear.

The most recent change, authorizing hand-salutes during the national anthem by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel, was sponsored by Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, an Army veteran.  It was included in the Defense Authorization Act of 2009, which President Bush signed on Oct. 14.

The earlier provision authorizing hand-salutes for veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag, was contained in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008, which took effect Jan. 28, 2008.

Soooooo - the Federal government had to get involved to let us make up our mind whether or not WE want to honor our allegance to our flag or not ! ! ! !

Are any of these people veterans????  If they are then why did they have to pass that "LAW".  Why not just make a resolution inorder to get it into the record?

I've always stood and always will as long as I'm physically able!

Oldest grand-daughter (15) made the HS varsity swim team last year as a freshman...First home meet (and first ever HS varsity swim meet for me), before the meet began, their coach lines the entire swim team up (boys & girls), and the team sings the National Anthem...accepello...IT WAS AWESOME...I personally thanked the coach for doing so...Our team is the only place where this is done...been to a lot of different HS meets now.

Youngest grand-daughter will be in her third year middle school swim this year...last year her coach (new) followed the same approach...when I thanked her, her response was..."Need to get them started now and comfortable doing it...it's part of our expectations for them to swim both in the middle school & HS programs. Our school system has it's faults like any other, but this "ain't" one of them. We're blessed to have great coaches, teachers and mentors in these positions.
