We all know what a box is,  thought I did.  When I started turning on my mini lathe. I discovered that those experienced guys and gals called a round container w/lid  a box. ?? Ok, I can go with that............. can anyone tell why a round container is a box? A box is not round.......or is it?

right out of the dictionary..
1... a container, case, or receptacle, usually rectangular, of wood, metal, cardboard, etc., and often with a lid or removable cover...

2... any enclosing, protective case or housing...

Well, boxing rings are square, but the bouts themselves are in rounds. Same reasoning, I'd guess.

I think it's because we are basically lazy and when we're talking about our work it's easier to say "box" than, container or coffer or portmanteau :)

I was thinking it could be called a jar but it is not made of glass or earthenware.
