Well.  while out and about this morning, hunting a bit of rust.    Saved three Atkins saws from being taped together,   $5?  got them for a buck each

This was the easy part, The "What is it"?

Well, the tag said fifty cents.   "Jaws" are just under 3-3/4" long/wide.   There is one notch for a screw on a base..

Wing nut to tighten things up?    Two counter sunk holes for screws.   Haven't found a namd anywhere on it.  Not much in the way of room inside there, either.

 

Vise? Clamp?   Uses?

Hard to tell scale of the item, but it sure looks like a saw vise. Your comment about "not much room" makes me wonder what kind of saw would fit.

The jaws are only 3-3/4"  wide....maybe 3" from the top of the jaws to the spring around the bolt. 

 

Might be used for sewing leather?

Looks like it is screwed down to a 90 deg angle, like a bench top. From there a piece of bendable material is clamped down and bent to the desired angle. I'm thinking that it was used in basket weaving to make a special angel or just a 90

Ok, as to scale of this...thing..

The saw is one of the three full sized saws I picked today.   A mid 1950s  HK Porter/Disston.  The spring covered bolt seems to stop things from going any deeper..

Maybe it might fit a dovetail saw?  

 

As   for the three saws in that bundle?    Two are HK Porter/Disston saws.....one is a little "newer" than the other.   The third saw?

The medallion says it is an Atkins model.    The grip where the hand goes?  That is a pressed in "Checkering"  ( like on a rifle stock)  to improve the grip?

Just $3.50 spent today...but, getting out of the house all by my lonesome?  PRICELESS!

Well, at least we know it wasn't a one-off hand made thing. Certainly looks identical.

I don't believe it is a saw vise, typically jaws on those are 12" or so. I would sooner think it would've been used for by a tinner for sheet metal work, for forming small pieces. Think of the "duckbill" type vice grips that have very similar jaws. Those are intended for forming sheet metal.
