made this a few years ago for my brother in law.  it was a present.  quarter sawn white oak.  leather top inset to the top.

all traditional mortise and tenon joinery.  only screws are used for the piano hinge for the top.  the little casters are just there so i could move it out to the driveway to get pics.  built based on a picture he saw and liked, with some tweaks to suit his needs.

That's absolutely gorgeous Dab.

Can you explain the process for insetting the leather?

leather is 1/16" thick.  so the plywood under the leather is recessed 1/16" from the solid oak border.  everything is given one coat of poly (i think i used Arm-R-Seal on this one, very easy to use), then wall paper glue (had to buy and entire gallon, only used about 1 cup, oh well) is applied to the plywood, allowed to get tacky per directions (i think, just follow the directions on the bottle), and the leather is stuck down.  of course, leather does not come in nice, pre cut rectangular pieces, had to buy a color stained hide.  before applying the glue, you VERY CAREFULLY cut the leather to the exact size of the recess.  there is a little play, but not much.  then you stick it down and clean up any excess glue.

brother in law loved it.  there was about $500 worth of lumber in that, he supplied the leather (he got back the excess).  his choice of color.

Very nice Doug.  Did you post the desk at Wood?  I don't remember seeing it.
