wood working talk

Featured Replies

There is no one that I know around me that speaks woodworking. I have fiends that talk marketing,  some tale long hauling, some talk religion and some who just talk. We are just a bunch of old guys that are retired and get together at McDonalds for a coffee. We all  have very much in common, we are older, retired and enjoy talking and fellowship over a coffee. Everyone should have such a group of friends. I am blessed with a bunch of guys from ALL  walks of life. When they ask how I spend my time they can't possibly understand woodworking, just like I can't understand their how someone could be into model trains or watching TV all day.

So now I can talk to guys and gals here  that share my total enjoyment of woodworking with a bunch of dorks like me:lol:

I can understand spending time doing any hobby if a person is passionate about it. What I can't understand is vegetating in front a TV for hours a day, especially the tripe that is offered these days.

I'm lucky...

got a television but no TV...

almost all of my friends are tradesmen from all walks of life...

most all prefer the out of doors..

but no suits...

I have a bunch of guys that I have coffee with everyday and have been for over 27 years. We also have lunch together everyday. We all grew up together here and have remained in this town. Some think we are a political group, others a sports group ( we do talk a lot of Alabama football) and then we just talk about anything that comes up. It is nice to have the diversity and then come here for my woodworking talk and coffee.

Hoping you all have a great day and get in the shop and make something, even if it is just time.

None of my local friends are woodworkers.  I am happy to have the privilege to come and talk with friends that do.  I do love a good sitcom to watch in the evening so I need my TV.

20 miles to the nearest Micky Ds for me. This place is my morning hangout. You are all welcome to join me in person. I'll make your trip worthwhile. Good coffee, homemade donuts. Y'all come.

In my hometown, there is a bakery that serves breakfast. When I visit my dad we always go there and there are always the same groups of people there conversing about whatever - sometimes it gets pretty comical eavesdropping on the conversation. Well, not really eavesdropping, they talk loud enough it is easy to listen in a few tables away.

Gene - just might take you up on that next summer - planning on a trip to Utah and such.

Yeh, guys, we are indeed fortunate to have friends to just "hang out" with.  We don't have to bicker about anything because we are ALL fortunate to be breathing, vertical, the right side of the grass, etc.

GOD Bless us all

I am not yet able to retire.  I have a couple decades to go so the morning coffee is usually me in my truck on the way to town.  Between work and school things, I find very limited shop time most weeks so I like to drop in here because the subject matter fits my spare time activities very well and I enjoy seeing what everyone is working on.  I prefer my shop to my television most of the time, and I simply do not follow most of the major sporting events which is generally a preferred conversation with many I work with and friends as well.  I can contribute little to those really.  There are some good discussions about other things at work that I enjoy to be sure but my co-workers and friends do not really understand my appreciation for the tools, corded and uncorded, and the woodworking that I find here.  I am O.K. with that.   I have come to realize that I might be a little unique in my circle of friends.  That is why I appreciate being allowed to be part of this circle when I can.

Brent, I knew a Brent Watson in Shelbyville a long time ago. Would that be you?

I'm afraid that I am not him although my travels used to take me to Shelbyville for work periodically.  I am near the I80 corridor in a slightly more northern locale of illinois these days.

Thanks, Brent.

The last I heard, he was in your area. Thats why I asked.

i've only been making sawdust, on and off, for about 40 years, so i don't know that much.  but if you post a good, thought provoking question, or show off something you've done, i might chime in and add my 2 cents.

i have a ruler in the corner, i understand it's a pretty important tool.....

Left the neighborhood I grew up in...so did everybody else...scattered to the four corners...

Into the service...couldn't talk about that...

Don't like Facebook, no contacts there...

Point is there are no woodworkers close by...  Funny thing is, I haven't sought any out...I'm happy making my sawdust in the company of the spiders (we have a deal...I don't bother them, they don't bother me...they keep all the other bugs out and they say nothing when I make a mistake).  One of them has a web just outside the garage door...'bout the size of my thumb...he's the bouncer.

I enjoy the forums I belong to...each having plenty to offer....and I like to offer back...life is good when you're around good people (even if it's virtual).  This forum definitely has good people...

When people ask why I only have 9 and 3/4 fingers, I get to talk woodworking.:D

With my hand in my pocket, the conversations are pretty mundane.

I hated Facebook until I learned how to control it.

I have mine set up so I see what I want to see.

Lots of good woodworking groups on there.
