August 8, 20169 yr I saw a video of a guy using one of those fine tooth, back stroke saws to cut off a piece on the lathe. It was small, maybe 8 inches long. He cut it off with the lathe turned off. Have you tried that? Can you do it with the lathe on slow RPM? Edited November 21, 20178 yr by Ron Dudelston tags added
August 8, 20169 yr I use one for this, too, with the lathe OFF. Due to the direction of the cutting action, the saw wouldn't cut well if the lathe were running in the "normal" direction unless you cut from the "back side" of the lathe. In my opinion, it would be unsafe to try this with the lathe running- regardless of the direction. The saw would likely get pinched as the pieces separated. I use the Dozuki saw- cross cut action- and really like the fine, clean cut it produces. I also use this saw for cutting dovetails.
August 8, 20169 yr Those saws have found their place in my shop. However, I clamp the wood so it does not move.
August 10, 20169 yr Author I posted this on the wood lathe forum because I wanted to know about cutting with the saw while it was mounted center to center. Also wanted to know if using it with the lathe rotating was OK. Thanks Lew, your advise was well taken. I have used my new hand saw on my lathe and like it. I will only use it when there is no rotation.
August 13, 20169 yr Great information guys, I had no idea you could use these saws for that purpose. Great topic Ron!
