Rust hunting Fathers Day week

Featured Replies

First off, a belated Happy Fathers Day to the Patriot Woodworker dads out there!  Hope you all had a great day!

It has become an annual outing to go garage sale stalking with the family because of the "More on 34" garage sale drive that just happens to occur on the same weekend as Fathers Day each year in our part of the world.  Anyway, I have included some shots of my garage sale rust hunts of the last two werkends plus a Stanley 45 and several coffin smoothers from an estate sale today.  The 45 is missing some parts but has the cutters.  I have to go through my parts pile and think that i can bring it back to near complete with parts I have.  I may have an unhealthy affection for the number 45 planes but if the deal is good, I am kinda weak in this regard!

The four small palm gouges looking tools may be for metal engraving?  They are not a typical carving tool profile, really.   Can anyone confirm?image.jpeg

That is a Plumb bob in front, several punches and chisels, a couple screwdriver bits, some cute little 6 inch pinchers, and the fence and depth gauge for a Stanley 78 style plane which is why I grabbed that box.  I am Hoping that the threads are right as I have several rabbet planes with these parts AWOL.

Got to looking a bit closer at the two small wooden plane and they both appear to be user made.  I can see evidence on the irons that they were once files.  They are kind of cool though!  I need to get them cleaned up a bit.

I have PTO time this week so took the very rough red handled Disston backsaw and reduced it to this little fella.  I paid 25 cents for the saw on a garage sale because the saw plate was badly cracked at the front.  I have been wanting a small backsaw for my shop so this little 8 inch was born.  I am not usually a big fan of cutting up old tools but made the exception here.  I still have to polish a bit more and sharpen it up but thought I would share.

Sorry for the late reply here Bondoman. What a great haul my friend!

Those are really cool tools. I have one complete 45 that I absolutely love, in excellent condition, it even has the original box joint case with a stanley sticker on the box. Those Palm Gouges look to me like Palm Mortisers.

Great find, and I bet you are still going through it all. You know, I always admire my friends out mid east and in the east, you guys are able to find all the good stuff in the sales, out here west, it just seems pretty dry, nothing but old Walmart furniture and scarves in our garage sales.

Thanks John.  I really enjoy the hunt and these have been a few good weeks.  I was unfamiliar with palm mortisers and will Google that further.  Thanks for the kind words and information.

I haven't seen em either Bundoman! Just an educated guess!

I could not see how they could be engravers, but they sure have a mortising chisel look to them. Sorry if I came off that I actually knew what I was talking about.

No problem at all.   These are a bit unusual in that they have (size????) numbers stamped on them and a makers mark that had me guessing engraving tools.  I dont know that my guess is correct and they definitely resemble other mortise chisels that I have.  They were on the table in 2015 for More on 34 garage sale weekend and the same set was back on the table at the same house this year.  I wondered about them in '15 and brought them home in '16.  I guess curiousity got the best of me.   The mystery continues....

Ok Bundoman, you got me interested now, what is the makers mark, and what kind of numbers are on the tools?

A little more information, John.

First two pictures with red background show left side #39 and right side #54.

Third image blue background shows left side #43 and right side #44.

Fourth photo is a picture of the makers mark that is similar on all four tools. It is Vautier with a small stamp shaped much like a smokers pipe.  Overall length of each is approximately 4 inches.  The 39 and 44 are flat back while the other two have a more rounded profile for the back.  They taper narrower to the backs in all cases.  Last photo shows the handles a little bit with indication of the huge expenditure I made on this curiousity.  I am  Googling some more as I originally thought the makers mark started with a "t".   It looks like some sort of jewelers engraving chisel may be the winner.  Still looking for a bit more information though.
