Wednesday's Wisdom For Woodturners May 4, 2016

Featured Replies

Another showery day in central Pennsylvania and everything is turning green.

The Woodturning OnLine newsletter arrived this morning. It has several very interesting articles. Having worked most of my life in electronics and computers, I found their video on dustless/chip-less turning fascinating.

Lately, several of the turning sites/blogs have been discussing how to add additional details/decorations to a turning. Here is a link, from the Woodturning OnLine newsletter, to an excellent PDF tutorial for adding decorative inlays to a bowl or other turnings-

http://www.westbaywoodturners.com/Events/Meetings_2015/Oct/presentation/stone inlay.pdf. This is one of the most informative how-to's on this subject that I have read.

Along those same lines is another article on creating a turned bracelet. This particular author does not use the metal "insert" as the base of the bracelet. She creates the bracelet entirely of wood and then adds an inlay mixture of crushed stone and a fixing agent. This is similar to the technique used in the above mentioned PDF. http://www.soyouthinkyourecrafty.com/hand-turned-wood-bracelet-tutorial/

Someone from another site posted a link to this video. This turner has some serious skills.

Try to ignore the egregious sanding error.

A couple of months ago, we looked at a video/turning of a sun burst bowl by  Martin Saban-Smith. His turning was painted with an air brush and produced spectacular results. Mr. Saban-Smith has released another video discussing the use of the airbrush for turners. It is definitely an interesting technique-

Finally, here's a fellow that definitely has some engineering blood coursing through his veins!

Even if you don't like the lathe, you have to love the view.

Safe Turning.
