Ply panel gimmie yer opinion

Featured Replies

I'm putting the side panels in the book case I'm building.   It's inch thick maple  Loose tenon  construction

I'm about to put the luan side panels in   they are 1/4" ply.  I need them to lie flat against the inside of the maple frame.

I'm wondering whether to glue and clamp them or to just pin nail them. The finish will be white paint so filling pin holes is not an issue.

What do ya think?  Glue it Or not?

Wow, I can see merit either way.  If it were me, I'd glue them in.

I'd glue them in as well.

I vote for gluing them in.

I really like the visual weight of this project. One thing I see you have done, and many overlook as a nice design detail, is making the rail on the bottom bigger than the one on the top.

Depending on the project and it's overall look, I play with the rail proportions making top and bottom the same, or make the bottom one bigger than the top. But making the rails at least slightly larger than the stiles always looks good and makes it look custom instead of manufactured.

On kitchen cabinets it really looks great since manufactured doors can be flipped and used either way, everything is always the same all the way around. I have worked in a lot of old homes in my area (1920' - 1940's) and original built-ins most often had a wider rail on the bottom and it has such great visual appeal.

Nice work so far!
