LONG way for a rust hunt

Featured Replies

Even invaded  Rondud's areas.   Spent the first night down in Martinsville, IN.    Then took off for Vicksburg, MS......I-55 is about the longest, most boring stretch of highway ever designed and built.    But to get there, we did a few other roadways,....and found a Gift & Antiqur shop in TN.......rather a bit of a let-down.     Someone else had a storefront to set up a "Garage sale"    Looked more like they had cleaned out the local Harbor Freight store......fraud!  Now, about that Gift store?

old cars.JPG

take a look at the cars.  This was the owner's house behind the store...he also had a workshop to work on these...

Wasn't much of any tools inside the store, and this area was a "Hands off" sort of thing.    Five stops.....plus two for food....had better luck with the food.    Got to the place about oh-dark-thirty.....pitched my tent, and broke out the cot.    Wound up breaking the cot, too.    Next day (#3) was sign day..

sign in.JPG

That LONG sign near the bottom is mine.....832 miles to home station.  Lots of toys sitting around, buy sell, swap...

I think I had already stashed MY Stanley 45 before this.....Another fellow brought along a Moxxon set up, and gave a class on sharpening.   I gave a how to on rehabbing a plane.   Somehow other toys would appear beside my old tent.   i think I gained a few pounds around the middle, from all the good food.  Next morning, woke up, got the fire pit going, people starting to show back up

morning after.JPG

was waiting around for Eddie to show up with the two pups....Got everything loaded up, time to go back home......Took a different route home.....found a 300 vender  "Mall" to go through...two floors.  found a few things...more places for food and fuel..got to martinsville around 1am.....slept on a couch.   pups slpted in their travel box...Strange weather...seemed the only nasty stuff was in IN.....snow on the way down, rain as soon as we got back across the Ohio river??Next morning headed to Ohio....found another mall in Centerville, IN....400 venders..LOTS of tools IF you looked in the right spots.......Got to Ohio, rained stopped???

Stopped at one of my favourite spots in bellefontaine, OH.  Picked a saw vise....$25 vise, for $10.

Have since cleaned it up a bit.   Wentworth No. 1.   As for the rest of the "booty"

This is now on the door to the show, the box under it came from Doe, up in Canada..a Stanley Roxton Pond No. 45.   Picked a saw or two, this is after a clean up..

challenger saw.JPG

It had an old copper wire wrapped around the handle.  Disston Keystone Challenger 5-1/2 ppi Rip saw, others?

coping saw.JPG

Needed a new blade is all..

hammer head.JPG

Bought a new handle for the 16 oz hammer head..

plane and chisel.JPG

Handyman 1248, needed a new knob, and a lot of cleaning, chisel is a Buck Brothers 3/8"   Picked a pair of braces, too

mutt and jeff.JPG

Mutt and Jeff.  a Millers Falls No.730  14IN and a #3410.   There was a CNC carved sign to hang on the fridge, and I won this little gem...

prize sign.JPG

I'll leave the translation to others...There was also a quart mason jar of home made Apple Butter.    maybe the BEST time I've ever had.   Oh, BTW, that pine tool box with a full load of hand tools?   Seems it was the Grand Prize of the hat draw...I was a little busy to take a picture..Sandra seemed to enjoy it....

Next year?   Charles Neil's place in VA.    A lot closer.....I might have to build another tool box.....Might even get to use that Stanley 45?

And many thanks to my "driver" for the trip, Madjestertoolworks' own Sue, and Grffin the wonder dog.

Nice haul but a long trip. The pups you mentioned, are they the ones you posted the picture of?

Yep, that would be Anna, and Max.    Anna seems to be a mix of Diva, and BRAT.     Max is a more laid back kind of pup.    My son has bonded with both of them.....looks like we will be keeping two pups.

Wasn't here in April when you posted this Steven...what I've been trying to tell "all, y'all"...Indiana's weather is usually nasty except for when it's miserable or bad.:P

Been to Centerville a few times...my younger brother lived there for over 20 years before he passed almost four years ago...some pretty good spots there & in Richmond

Looks like you had a good trip & time...not always all about the rust hunting and finds, but the food finds too...:P

Tried this excursion a few years back on a long 3 day weekend...we drove near Cincinnati  and stayed on a Thursday evening to start the quest early on a Friday morning. Lot of driving and a lot of stops...made it roughly to the middle of TN, before heading back home. Traveled almost exclusively on old Rt 127...Any & everything you can image for sale. You either need a camper, motor-home or motel reservations months in advance...that was the hardest part finding a place to stay along the way.

HGTV used to show the annual event in an hour long special...don't think they do that anymore

2017 schedule: http://www.127yardsale.com/

A similar event that runs East/West and earlier in the year...
