March 17, 201610 yr comment_65496 This week I started moving the cutoff, slabs and rippings, left over from the kitchen island/table, that had collected between the table saw and the lathe. I'm down to a couple of extra 8/4 hard maple planks that I bought to replenish my rolling pin turning blanks. Once those get stored on the lumber rack, I'll have unfettered access to the lathe. A tiny shop SUX! Looks like it is bowl turning week.. For those of you who follow The American Woodshop, Scott Phillips has a turning video on making a mega bowl. I did notice one controversial thing as Scott was getting ready to turn. Looked like he used drywall screws to mount the face-plate to the turning blank. Most turners feel that drywall screws are too brittle for this application. Another video on a large bowl is from the Woodworkers Guild of America. The video is posted on their site- here's the link- http://www.wwgoa.com/video/turning-large-wooden-bowls-10353/ Notice the Laguna lathe... NICE! I'd like to give a big shout out to Patriot member Todd Clippinger for the heads up on the following Brian Havens' video. Brian explains how to turn a bowl blank round- without a bandsaw. Brian's explanations are always thorough and interesting. The shavings really fly on this one. As he mentions, at the end of the video, this method is suited only for green wood. If you are near Provo, Utah- the Utah Woodturning Symposium is being held in May.
