John Moody Posted January 25, 2016 Report Posted January 25, 2016 I was at an auction last night and this boxwood ruler came up for bid. I didn't take a before picture, but it was so dirty and black it was hard to see the name. It appeared to be double stamped or something. I had decided it was an E.A. Sterns so I bid on it and got it for 10.00. After I got home I cleaned it up and could then see that it was a Stanley No. 68, but it is also stamped No. 680 E C Simmons "Redline". E C Simmons would have been a Keen Kutter ruler. Quite interesting if Stanley was making the Boxwood rulers for Keen Kutter. What is even stranger about this ruler is on the inside it is stamped No.10. This is not a Stanley No.10 as it was a mm marked ruler. So I think what I have is one that was missed stamped more than once and was probably not suppose to get out. After I cleaned it up it looks pretty good. I guess for now I will put it in the cabinet with the others. Quote
John Morris Posted January 25, 2016 Report Posted January 25, 2016 Mis-stamped, you could have a winner there John if it's anything like mis-marked coins and bills in the money collecting world! That is a cool ruler. Since boxwood rulers were made by the billions back then, is it possible you have one or a few contractors that made those for the retailers such as Keen Kutter and Stanley, perhaps they made the exact same one for each retailer but just stamped a different brand on the ruler? This one got both brands by accident, may have been a Monday, worker was hung over? John Moody 1 Quote
John Moody Posted January 25, 2016 Author Report Posted January 25, 2016 That's what I was thinking John. Stanley was the largest manufacturer of boxwood rulers. They bought out the rule making division of several other companies. I don't remember reading about them taking over the E C Simmons division but I will be doing a bit more research on it. i don't know if it raises the value a lot like coins, but I'm guessing it is close to a very limited number of these out there. John Morris Posted January 25, 2016 Report Posted January 25, 2016 As far as you know, did Stanley make the rulers for other manufactures? Quote
John Moody Posted January 26, 2016 Author Report Posted January 26, 2016 I got out my book on Stanley Rulers this afternoon and found this page. It looks like Simmon Keen Kutter was a customer of Stanley. So I guess this was a double stamp mistake. Quote
John Morris Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 Just as you thought!!!! Great research John! John Moody 1 Quote
