December 30, 201510 yr Ok, started today on a mission. Took the boss to a friend of hers. Plan was to take the Boss out for Lunch in honour of the Boss' birthday this week. I changed the direction they had planned to go, same Burger King...different town. Then, they wanted to go to wall E World....where else. Although the store was almost across the Michigan West St. I suggested a different store.....same name, different town. Headed from Sidney,OH south, taking the "back way" to Piqua, OH......maybe 10 miles away.....even drove past Scott Phillips' house. Dropped the two wallywaorld shoppers off at the door, saying I had a store to go to. Yes, there was a Home Depot next door.....don't really like the place. However, downtown Piqua has two antique stores side by side. Today, I even found a parking space right out front. Lots to look over, but I had a budget to keep. I'm cheap. Did see a stanley #6 ( $41) and two Stanley #5s ( $29 each!) lots of BAD saws, Army surplus stuff. Braces with LONG augers......Then, passed a shelf.....a Union No.5c was sitting there, complete ( for a change) and was within the budget @ $12 Went to check out of the first store, happened to look down ( not a good thing) and saw a tiny plane or two sitting there. Included that in the bill for the day... Soo, what did $35.38 net me? The Union #5c and a Stanley No.90 type 2.......Union has zero cracks in it, the Stanley has one. I was able to get a discount because of that crack. Was $29, now $22. Cute little bugger. Maybe an inch or so wide Somehow, I don't think Union MFG Co. used that shade of green on their planes. may have to change that....I got the little fellow all cleaned up, and sharpened Black mark on the sole is just where the nickel plating went awol...about that crack? Look right where the top curves up. Crack goes as far as the slot for that bolt. Seems to work ok. The depth adjuster is the older kind Has Stanley cast there. Iron is now flattened and sharpened up. Bolts are cleaned and oiled up. Not too bad a day, just being the "Driver" for the Boss? Got everyone home, and then worked over the little plane. Will start on the Union tomorrow. The Boss' Birthday? 12.31. 51 You can do the math at your own risk....
December 30, 201510 yr Thru my life, I've learned there are two things you never ask a lady a.) How old are you? b.) Are you pregnant? Nice shopping !!
December 30, 201510 yr As Lew said, Nice shopping, Bandit. And Lew, at my age, I'm just not that curious.

December 31, 201510 yr Author And, I can't out-run her.. Anyway, I did get the Teal coloured (yuck) Union #5c all spiffy-fied up. Gave it a test runon some curly maple. Rear handle has been cleaned of any trace of black paint. Low front knob is from the spares box. Teal paint ( even the lateral lever and the frog) is now gone...replaced with black paint. Brass wheel shines nicely. Sides are cleaned up... Big mouthful of maple shavings....the bolt that holds the lever cap in place? Is a replacement, as the OEM one was just plumb worn out. Had to shorten the newer bolt by about four threads. lateral lever has been twisted back to where it was meant to be. The bolt in the knob came with the knob. Sole is already flat (enough for a Jack plane) and cleaned up. Looks better than what I brought home? As for the we plane....it is cleaned up, and sharpened up. Gave it a test drive on the maple.. I was going at an angle with this one. The cracked areas didn't seem to affect anything. This is a Type 2. Made before the SW era. About 1898 or so? So...not too bad a shopping trip? The Union was made around 1920, either before or right after Stanley bought out Union. Maybe a type 3?
