December 19, 201510 yr Was unable to get a whole lot done today.....but, the last mortise has been finished up. Started to get a few things messy with glue.. Both of the short aprons are glued in place. The one on right was tight enough without a clamp. The one on the left needed a bit of clamping. The long apron will get some Elmer's later. Tested out how to actually clamp this thing. Wedges were cut. They would either just slide off the legs, or away from the clamps. Sooo, I drove a nail through the wedge. Just enough to grab onto the leg. I left the rest of the nail sticking out. The clamp would try to slide off, and would hit the nail. There are two "extra" clamps in the picture. Seems the legs wanted to rotate out of the way.....clamps kept that from happening as well. Still needed a hammer to "guide" things to where they needed to stay. While this mess was taking up space on the bench, I tried the same things with the rest of the base.. Hey, it was the only flat space in the entire Dungeon. The long apron was glued up here. The pipe clamp wanted to rotate away. that explains the c clamp. Again, the "nailed" wedges A detail. Like how the hand chopped mortise looks. This white oak is very stringy. maybe tomorrow, I can glue the other half of the base? Then assemble the entire thing. Cussing like a Squid today. Not a whole lot got done today, too many other errands to do. Will let these sit overnight, and see what else I can do. Might go and buy some dowels. Maybe add them between the legs, to keep them stable? might be all I spend on this thing, other than time. Chisels are getting dull, might be close to a Maintainence Day?
