Replacing Sanding Dics

Featured Replies

The sanding disc needs to be replaced on my belt/disc sander. Last time I didn't get all the old glue off and it didn't stick very good.

What's a good way to clean it off?

Thanks Lew. I'll try that in the next few days.

I'm wondering the same thing.

The Pressure Sensitive Adhesive  is a polymer and won't respond to  any of the solvents I've tried.

I read that acetone may work

But  the adhesive does soften when warmed  ( don't use a torch, it can  warp your steel or aluminum  backing disc)  and I recently discovered that PSAs often respond to any oil in any form.

So, when i do mine, I'll put a little heat on it,  and then  hit it with some  grease and take a plastic scrubber to it.

Remove the  old disc with heat and the PSA may come off with the old disc.

I usually take mine off right after sanding. The  heat from the friction softens the adhesive. Maybe you could just sand on scraps to build up heat then remove the disc.

I've also used lighter fluid to remove the sticky stuff.

A little heat always worked for me, I used a heat gun but anything that will warm it up should help. The trick of sanding something sounds like an easy way to do it.

sanding something helps loosen it. Also a torch does work but you need to remember you're just heating it to warm not getting it hot enough to weld.

to remove the old adhesive I use alcohol and a scotch-brite pad while the disk is running.

When I used to use 3M 77 I'd run the disk (w/o the sandpaper) and push a piece of scrap against it. The heat build up would usually do the trick. Residual junk required lacquer thinner and steel wool.

But that was with a 12" disk and a 1 1/2 hp motor. Dunno if a belt/disk would drive it when enough pressure was applied to get the job done.

Thanks for all the input.

Since the disc is just about off, I'll try some of these tips.

I was waiting for some paint to dry this morning so I pulled the cover and the old disc off of the sander.

I used my blow dryer that I use to remove patterns from scroll saw cutting. It helped to get the old disc off but there was still a lot of glue. I used some Goof Off to get most of that off and then had to use some sandpaper for the rest of the glue.

Polished it up and stuck the new pad on. I'm good to go now. Thanks for all the input.

What do you use now?

I tried a Repositionable adhesive from Elmers and it doesn't hold for very long.

I've read that Freeman Latex Cement is the SHIZZ for this application but there are water based adhesives you can get at the borg

I may end up trying one .

Cliff, I no longer have a belt/disc combo. For my 12" disks, I use the stick on type from Shopsmith. Easy on, easy off.
