October 11, 201510 yr A couple of weeks ago I had the second surgery on my left hand due to the numbness since the first carpal tunnel surgery. I had not lost my feeling before having the first carpal tunnel surgery, but I was experiencing problems holding things and doing certain task with that hand. I knew it was time to get it corrected since I work at a keyboard all day everyday when I am not in the shop doing woodworking. So long story, after the first surgery my left hand was numb in my thumb, pointer and middle finger and across my palm. The only thing really working was my ring finger and pinky. after waiting six weeks for the feeling to return, I had the nerve tested and it was all good. The Dr. went back in to see what was causing the numbness and opened up the tunnel even further. When I came to and everything wore off, I was still numb in all the same places. So I have been off a bit as typing is difficult and several other task are also. But October was a busy month for us and my wife has turned into quite the woodworker. We have been making cutting boards, bread boards and cheese boards along with some other projects we have had. Not sure what i would do without her. Here are a few pictures of our outdoor booth at First Friday in October. We change the color and display of the tables with the seasons. Large End Grain Boards. We use a few of our picking items and antiques along with some of my planes for the display. It gets people to stop and them we get to talk to them. Medium boards and Edge grain boards. I found that piece of live edge in the shop and thought it was maple until I ran it through the planer. i think it is chestnut. Anyway, it was the first item to sell. Bread and Cheese boards I was at a show a few months back and these bracelets were the thing. I bought one for my wife from a woodworker that was setup. When I got back i got with a friend of mine that turns and told him he should do some of these, I didn't have time. So he did and we have sold a bunch of them. Those three pieces of walnut were cutoff pieces I was going to through away Beth saw them and ran them through the planer and sanded them, oiled and sold them right off. You just never know what will sell. The next day we setup in another location for Octoberfest. We went out before First Friday and setup our tent so it would be ready for 6:00 am Saturday morning. So now we are getting ready for the 27th Jack Daniels Championship BBQ Invitational cookoff that will be on the 24th of October. So October has so far been WOW!!!! I did work in building this Medieval Embroidery Frame for my physical therapist. Even though my hand is still numb, we have been really busy and getting some work out of the shop. Please keep my in your prayers that I will get my feeling back soon or that i just get my feeling back. As i said typing is very difficult right now as i am not used to one finger typing. But I am trying to remain positive and move forward.
October 11, 201510 yr That's some knockout work there John, absolutely a cool set up indeed. The bracelets are way nice, and I agree, those walnut cutoffs are great for cutting boards too. You may have just hit on something, wouldn't that be cool if you could veer away from the segmented cutting boards and just cut sections from slabs for cutting boards? My wife and I were in Bed Bath and Beyond a week ago looking for a blender, and I saw this Acacia Cutting Board and I thought of you, how these simple boards cost this much, and the time and craftsmanship that is in yours. I hope your getting paid well.I like your autumn setup colors, very cool. Are those bracelets selling for $10 or $100?

We were at a show when I saw those and they were selling for 200.00. We found one guy selling for 100.00 so we bought one. They have sold very well.

October 12, 201510 yr Great setup, John! Looks like the Mrs. needs to get a bigger cut of the profits

October 16, 201510 yr Author I am very happy to see that price on those bracelets John, it seems typically in fly over country the artisans mainly woodworkers under price their goods, I cringe when I see how much work artists put into their goods, then sell them so they are basically making about a buck an hour. 200 is a fair price too. 200.00 is a very good price for them considering the kits and the time that goes into making them. In the market we are in here, it is just more than most people would pay. So we decided to take a little less, still make money, offer a good product and sell them so we can make more and not price ourselves out of business. It is important to know the market you are in and what it will bear. All of us would love to make more on the items we work so hard on, but you have to pick and choose what you think you can sell and decide how bad you want to do that and how many you want to sell. The thing about the bracelets is we are moving a good number of them and timing has been good for Christmas.
